i saw a movie like that awhile back befor i even really knew what anime was and i liked the movie cuz it had so much blood and gore, and it was also sad too cuz of what happend to all those japanese when that bomb was droped. all of the japs around that part mostly suffered, and that really touched me, now this was before i even knew what anime was.Dexter86 wrote:Hmm, Grave of the Fireflies I guess, is not exactly what he's searching for. (But a BRILLIANT anti-war movie of course)
Since you're searching for modern day warfare, you might as well ignore this postl, but "Barefoot Gen", a movie about the Hiroshima bombing, is some pretty heavy stuff. (pretty graphic movie, and a-bombs are always a topic.)

Same here, I watched Barefoot Gen back in 1995 on a German TV show focused around the 50th "anniversary" of the Hiroshima bombing.
They showed a lot of documentaries and interviews and later that night, that very movie. Very disturbing to me back then. (well it still is)

if you don't mind mechs in your war, Full Metal Panic, Gunparade March are pretty much modern war shows. There's a few scenes in Metropolis too.
Saikano is definately a war show (well, actually it's a love story, but it has a lot of war in it.) If you ignore Chise, there's a ton of war stuff, mainly infantry.

The sword, it thirsts to drink of man,
The sword at last must win,
Today is gone, and yesterday,
Must echo in the wind.
