You also have to keep in mind that this type of censorship doesn't have a direct relationship to the Japanese views of sex, which are traditionally rather liberal (when compared to Western Christian traditional 'sex=devil' sort of view). So, that's why you'll see sexual themes even in kids' anime sometimes. There's no huge stigma associated with sexual activity and primiscuosity there - it's sort of a 'well, whatever, do it if you feel like' approach. They don't really see any reason to hide it; the Buddhist/Shintoist religion doesn't concern itself much with sex, and the culture is only happy (wouldn't we all?)

But showing genitals is rude. Paradoxical?

Ahh, yes.

I am aware of the lack of truly sexual theming. Too many people point fingers and jump to the issue of sexism, displaying womens' bodies as openly as humanly possible, but then shading over what physically defines a man as a man.

I just wanted to randomly cry sexism before anyone else could do so.

i was about to say, i cant count the shows i've seen with sexual themes that were aimed a little kids, oh well, do what ya like.

i'll remember this and not walk around naked in the middle of tokyo when i go there some day, wouldnt want to offend anybody. will have plenty of sex tho.

Well, female genitals are just as taboo, you know. And male nipples are also just as legal. Even more legal, in fact

NOW - I'd never claim that Japanese society is not sexist. On the other hand, perhaps equating breasts and whatever other secondary sexual attributes you may have to genitals is something I don't really agree with, even in straight biological terms.

Go figure

Not necessarily saying I'm interested, just a little confused by the whole thing. Oto seems to have put it into an obscure and somewhat nonsensical perspective for me, however.
