I'd say it depends on the anime - some practice male fanservice by prettifying the guys, while others add muscles galore and macho posing scenes (think Gateau from Sorcerer Hunters).

I think we can agree what 'female' fanservice is - taking attributes that men (or even women) like about females and making them excessive and boldly stated in the anime. This usually means body parts are larger, waists are smaller, eyes are bigger, girls are looser, etc. We agree on this.

For the opposite, 'male' fanservice, it's the same concept - take attributes that females (or even men) like about male characters and make them excessive or bodly stated in the anime. For pretty boy anime, this usually means big eyes, possibly long hair, and smooth features (no bulging foreheads and ugly mouths). For romance anime (think Inuyasha), it means big eyes and tiny effeminate bodies, with just a hint of muscles around the edges - because the girls watching tend to be younger and liking the young prepubescent looking guys. For anime like Saiyuki, you get the muscles and eye shots (certain facial expressions, slow pans, almost slutty looks and poses but without the nastily excessive muscle bulges).

The problem is, most men agree on what is wanted from females - big breasts, small wastes, curved hips, and pretty faces. Women, especially anime fans, have wider tastes when it comes to picking characteristics they like in males. Some like pretty guys, some like muscles, some like neanderthal-looking characters - it depends on the anime and which group of females the creator is aimed at pleasing.

Maybe if more anime showed man-breasts the way they show woman-breasts, we'd have a similar definition for male and female fanservice. As it is, they're very different because male and female fans are very different.

Well said, I think that there is a broader range (if not overtly, at least slightly more) with male fanservice than the female counterpart.
