I was talking to my librarian a few months back (while I was still in school) and he was like "after i saw a few eppisodes of lain, I realy had to lay back and just think about it for a while. Its heavy stuff" .

The X movie is confusing only because they tried to squeez the qhole manga into a single movie. The series (which isnt a sequal, prequal or anything to the movie) is alot beter.

FLCL I've haerd is alot more about japanese culture and lifestyle than anything, so you realy have to know the subject to understand the anime.

Anime is one of the few places that I go to find something thought provoking. Sometimes it is enough to sit back and wonder what I just observed...other times I need to talk to someone about it. The directors know what they are doing, sometimes there IS no clear cut answer or interpretation. The point is to get people to think and speculate. Some of the series that had me thinking more than others:

Habane Renmei: The whole town and its relation to the Habane
Evangelion: The nature of how the instrumentality project was controled
Wolf's Rain: The very end
Revolutionary Girl Utena: The end of that one..

Hard to go into specifics without being a spoiler

You know, I'm dying to see that one. I've seen the movie, but I really want to see the series. My problem is I see two boxed sets, and I hear of the "rose collection" and something else. I'm not sure how this works, so I haven't attempted to purchase any at all yet. :?

The Utena series is broken into three major story arcs.... and thus the box sets are sold in three different boxes.

The first story arc is called the "Rose Saga" it pretty much sets up everything: the duels, the characters, situations. That box set comes with the two discs for the "Rose Saga" plus the Utena movie (which is stand alone from the series). While the Rose saga has its drama, there are lighter moments that are intersparsed here.

The Second Story arc is called "The Black Rose Saga". It ups the ante and the stories have more of a dramatic weight. While a separate arc unto itself, much that will be seen in the third arc is set up here.

The Third arc is called "The Apocalypse Saga" and it is really that...This show lent to it a tremendous amount of emotional weight and here everything pays off....The ending was.... well it would be telling..

I would like to thank the Amazon for introducing me to it. :D
