On the story:

Remember that the 26 episodes are in many "phases". (They outline the different phases of the series in the booklets included with the Platinum series DVDs. I recommend everyone read these episode commentaries -- they do a very good job outlining the main themes of Evangelion.)

The first phase is the "early part of the series" (Ep. 1-7). We learn about Shinji, Rei, Misato, and get the surface info on Evangelions and Angels. Episode 6 (Rei II) is the "climax" of this arc, featuring two Evas working together for the first time to defeat an Angel.

The second phase is the "Action Arc" (Ep. 8-14). Each of these episodes deal more with eliminating Angels -- and has Asuka as the headstrong motivator of this arc.

The next two episodes (Ep. 15 & 16) are the transition from Action Arc to the last major part of the series, dealing with the psychlogical sides of the many characters.

Episodes 17-19 are also described in the guide as "The First Child Trilogy", which deals with the Fourth Child incident and Shinji's reaction to it.

The question would be: which of these different phases of the series do you think they should use (or what combination of phases will they try) to make this movie work?

(Unfortunately, since I don't have Platinum Volume 5 yet, I can't comment further than Episode 17. Before you ask, yes, I haven't seen the entire TV series -- Only the first 17 episodes and the two movies.)
