In my humble opinion, Azumanga Daioh is the best manga out there. It may not have a plot, it may not have a point, it may not even have fan service, but it does have one thing that most mangas out there today don't have: a cast of lovable and totally relatable charecters. Tomo, the girl that loves to chalenge people(even though she'll lose most of the time) Sakaki, the tough looking athletic girl(with a hidden love of all things cute),and many more. Those of you that have read it, know what i'm taking about(and if you don't then read it! or take my quiz (http://quizilla.com/users/Koiyuki/quizz ... e%20you%3F) if you want to know) I loved from the first page to the last, not only because of the charecters that i could connect with, but the sheer hilarity of it all. If you ever see it in your manga section, give it a read, i guarantee you'll love it.

My personal favorite is Naruto, but I'm just an action type of guy. Love Hina was also outstanding. That pretty much covers all the manga I've read. I do, however, have a list as long as my arm for manga I'd like to read with Kare Kano right at the top, followed by NGE and any number of Gundam side stories. Most manga I'm looking into I've already seen in anime form so I already have a positive relationship with the characters and the story.

Better than the original
I gotta say, and I know it's been said before, but the Evangelion Manga for me strikes a chord as one of the best. While I like the show, please don't hate me for this, the manga is a thousand times better.
(SPOILER ALERT)
For one thing, the fact that they actually kill off Toji, especially right after he'd made friends with the class Rep, and she'd been so cheery about their relationship, really was a much better turn-out than the anime; letting him live kind of sullied, even cheapened, the moment. Also, in the anime, of course Shinji was furious, but at least his friend was alive; in the manga, however, you feel even more for him - his father LITERALLY just killed his best friend, and one can feel his hatred right then and there; that, and he doesn't just threaten to destroy NERV, he actually TRIES to.
The relationship between the characters is a little more advanced as well. Rei and Shinji are more than just friends, which complicates matters due to Rei's genetic "heritage" - stepping into the Hamlet-like idea of incest. Asuka shows more emotion for him, and her obsession over Kaji is even escalated - she at one point strips down to her bra and asks him to touch her, after having just been told she's "just a child" by him.
Shinji's character, as well, is really different. He's slightly more outgoing, and has much more of a backbone than in the anime. In the show, Shinji is a scared, wimpy, whiny, even immature little kid effectively whom one just can't help but hate at times. The manga presents a different character, however; he seems much more mature, and while still a little whiny at first, has good reason for it - he recognizes that he's not a human to these people, more like a means to fit an end, and is just looking for someone who will finally take care of him. The comic portrayal of Shinji is much more like any fourteen-year-old in his position: his entire life, no one has really ever been close to him, his mother is dead, and his father has abandonded him...only to, years later, return to him and order, not ask, him to save the world from horrific creatures; he befriends a girl whom he soon falls in love with, although it isn't the love he was expecting (remember, she's his mom in reality), and the other girl whom he seems attracted to hates his guts, is the most immature preson he knows, and yet constantly bides for his attention over the others. Let's face it, you have to give kudos with this Shinji for putting up with all of this and ending up more masculine than his anime counterpart.
One major factor of this may be the author's choice to make Rei far more human than in the anime; she is always confused, and believes herself to have nothing more than her value as a pilot. Shinji, therefore, finds meaning outside of piloting Eva in his wanting to help and be with her. While Shinji in the anime is the weakest character mentally, in the Manga he is much stronger due to his interactions with Rei; she supports him in his insecurities, and he supports her by being the one person who actually cares for, even loves, her, and wants her to know that she matters.
Finally, much, MUCH more about the backstory is revealed. While the anime leaves one guessing about lots of things, exactly what Seele's motives are, especially, the manga all but lays it out right there for you. It's been debated whether or not Shinji and Rei actually love each other in the show, but once again is blatantly obvious in the comics - there are times when even the most adament Shinji+Asuka lover will admit that one can see a better relationship between Rei and Shinji. Asuka is also presented in a different light. While many dislike her for her hubris and competitive nature in the show, you REALLY feel sorry for her in the manga; you can tell her obsession with being the best stems from her obsession with being loved and recognized. Her love of Kaji, as well, isn't just a school-girl's fancy like it is in the show, where substituting Shinji isn't really all that hard for her; she actually is madly in love with him - however disturbing that may be - and goes to fairly extreme measures to make him try and feel the same, even telling him exactly how she feels.
In all, the show is a classic, don't get me wrong; but I'm a writer - my loe lies in written works like comics and books, and I can tell you that the comic is definitely better than the show, despite having come after the anime. If you liked Evangelion the anime, you'll die for Evangelion the manga. It trully is a great piece of literature.
