It's pretty good.
You might find that 'perhaps' you disagree with a few of the chracters choices at the end of the series... but it's essentially a big whopping epic.
As mentioned before, knights, cat girls, robots (melef?), dragons, time travel, romance and intrigue. Oh, and pointy noses.

Build a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Yeah, there are giant robots, but like many other shows, the robots aren't really the main focus. The emphasis is more on the romantic drama/love triangle, and also on the various themes of predetermination/free will, man's warlike nature, the tendency of power to corrupt, and so forth. The robots are just vehicles for fighting, albeit pretty cool ones. I personally liked the airships/Levistones concept more.
To draw a comparsion, Angelic Layer is billed as a tournament fighting show, like Pokemon for girls where the characters fight with "Battle Barbies." However, the fights and battle dolls, while visually impressive, are not really the main focus of the show--the fights are more often expressions of the characters' emotions/wishes/dreams/insecurities, and the main emotional lines of the show revolve around a mother-daughter relationship and various middle-school cutesy romantic situations.
Getting back to the topic, I would highly recommend Escaflowne, and you can probably find the more recent box set for around $70. I prefer the series to the movie, because the movie is darker and cuts out a lot of the romancey drama and character development that takes place over the show's 26 episodes.

The series is awesome. I bought the series after seeing a couple of amv's from SSJVegita, Dcd, and bote. I thought the series was cool in amv form, but its even better just watching it. Dilandau and Van are definetly my favorite characters.
The manga on the other hand is alot different from the series and movie.
If you want to buy the series boxset, which includes the movie(although you already have it...)here is the link.
