Well, you can't be a real company and host AMVs, since they're technically illegal. As far as hosting licenced anime media, since you don't hold any licences (and nor do you have enough money to buy them), that's out of the question as well.DJ scratch-n-sniff wrote:YOu should have just said that from the begining. OK heres the run down. Someone plus myself are makeing a anime media website that is going to host AMV's and licensed anime media.
Honestly, you sound like a bored 13 year old who's too lazy to mow lawns. You sound completely unprofessional and show absolutely zero grasp of how licencing works as well as how to make a good business plan.
Get a real job.

A real job sucks. Invest in drugs!! Or maybe porn. Either would be better. Getting a job sucks. You quickly realize that it's not knowledge or experience that helps you advance in the ranks. It's "Knee Time" if you catch my drift.dokool wrote:Well, you can't be a real company and host AMVs, since they're technically illegal. Anyways, it's not like this thread is really going to go anywhere. As far as AMVs go there's not much of a problem but hosting licensed anime is VERY illegal. Actually hosting AMVs is technically illegal as well but oh well.

Well sir, I am an electrical engineer with graduate degrees and a really big dog.... bigger than anyone's dog!!
Just kidding about that dog bit. Get a hold of yourself and start using more punctuation.
Anime is expensive to license. Major titles cost millions and even minor titles are in the hundreds of thousands. All of this just to sell what might be 10,000 or more units of a single volume. Profits are marginal at best and even then it is a shot in the dark given what the fan base may or may not accept. What is popular in Japan does not always translate into a success over here.
Something that has happened in recent years is that many studios in Japan are taking a greater concern with fansubs and pirating. They are concerned about losing revenue that is more often coming from American sales. They are also concerned about re-importation of titles into Japan sometimes before they are released legitimately and with more episodes per disc (most Japanese DVDs contain two epsidodes).
So don't get all excited if everyone goes "HUH!?!?!" when you announce your plans. They thought that either you were a millionaire playboy or a kid that had no idea of the monies involved. Dream big... cause much of the world has yet to be introduced to anime... there are plenty of expanding markets for it.

Good, your first admission that you don't know anything. Always a start.DJ scratch-n-sniff wrote:Yeah well your right dakool I dont know how licenseing works and I dont have a grasp on how buisness is suppose to go, yet.
I'll have my college degree (that I got last year @ 18) take the Pepsi Challenge against your IQ any day of the week.DJ scratch-n-sniff wrote:I'm not 13 and I'm probebly a hell of alot smarter than you I've been involved in the anime communtiy for years now and I can do things you cant even begin to imagen.
That's more or less all stuff I'd done before 13 (except for the video editing stuff which took me another couple years. What's your point? It's nto worth it to play the "lol I am so sm4rt" game with me 'cause I can pound you into dust, and it's a moot point because there's a pair of twins up in Canada who've been making better AMVs than me for 2-3 years. However, if <i>you</i> act like the asshole, it's your reputation that suffers.DJ scratch-n-sniff wrote: cause Im not a 13 year old kid with no brains Im a 17 year old web designer/graphic artist/video editor/php programmer/encoder/layout coder/ and I can do awhole bunch of other crap as well and no I dont have alot of times on my hands Im just really smart which is more I can say for you.
Because saying "Fuck the law" is really going to move you forward in the worldDJ scratch-n-sniff wrote:And as far as unlicensed anime I dont care I use it anyways fuck the law. If you cannot write like a normal human being (Proper grammar! Clear concepts! etc), you cannot expect us to take you seriously with a minimal degree. In your posts you've displayed a horrible candor and minimal comprehension of how the world works, and I've called you on it. You'll certainly have to deal with a lot worse than me if you hope to succeed in any business venture, so considering that all this thread has done is prove that you don't have a thick skin, I suggest practicing pronouncing "Would you like fries with that?"

Dude, that is NOT cool. And coming from a 17-year old, this is not a very good statement to back your statements up with. In fact, that kind of talk can get you kicked out of here REALLY fast. Trust me on that one.some 26 year old guy who still watches cartoons and makes music videos using them and goes to little trekie conventions to show em off so he can show all his little fanfriends his little awards. man thats some life you got there.
And also, a word of advice: Never mess with a guy who has Spider Jeruselum as his avatar. No matter what the circumstances are, do NOT piss off Spider Jeruselum.
I actually tried offering some decent advice early on in this thread, and right now...
...you ain't looking too good now, bub.
Me? I'm a 22-year old college student who's about to graduate with a Bachelor's in Information Technology with a minor in Japanese and a...
...wait what the HELL am I doing? Why should anyone care what my background in things OTHER than anime is? Sure it helps back up the facts that I'm smart, but it DOESN'T back up what I know about anime, the industry, and the people involved.
Here's what I can tell you though:
I'm a 22 year old married man with a lovely wife who is also into anime. Although I've been into anime and manga for some 10 years and still going, I still learn new things and meet some very interesting people. I've ran into some big names like Harvey Pekar, Steve Bennette, Jessica Calvello, Tiffany Grant, Anne Exeter, and even had some footage taken for the "Otaku Unite" documentary, and have had some of my writing published in Animerica!
I've been going around forums finding noobs, hopeful but ignorant dreamers, and also other people who are, in short, smart-asses. What do I do when I get there? Try to set them straight and help them out as the senpai I am! I've put some deep stuff that's brought about heavy discussion here on the AMV threads, and while not all of them have been winners, they've definitly picked the brains of some the most well-versed anime fans and otaku alike!
Going around all high and mighty is just something a 17 year old WOULD do! You think you're king of the hill, smarter than all us "NORMAL, WORKING MAN" Otaku, and frankly, your attitude has been an insult to the people here and the otaku that make up the anime industry as a whole!
Who would go to download anime or AMVs from a place where the person running it doesn't even LIKE anime, as you apparently don't given the statement I quoted above! Companies like AnimEigo and ADV both were originally founded by fans, and have a great understanding and appreciation for them.
It's because they understand and cherish the fan base that they permit places like a-m-v.org to exist because legally, they could shut this place down quite quickly, or at least remove videos that they have licensed.
BUT THEY DON'T!
Why? Because they are smart people who are also fans and think that AMVs are free publicity to get people to watch their anime and also a great honor to have their footage used and used well. Some are even made by the workers at these companies themselves (maybe).
The point is:
1. You have no right to say the things you did as you should well know that they are hurtful and mean to me, to the others on the forum, and to many other Otaku.
2. Your plan for hosting a site with anime and AMVs is SO flawed, that I can't even begin to tell you where all the problems lie. The financing, budgeting, and the dodging of the law simply would not work for a 17 year old. HELL, you're still considered a MINOR!
3. You think you have money to pay for all that? Wait until you start paying bills?
4.
Oh yeah? Can you do Calculus, build a database using SQL or Oracle, set-up a network on 100 Mbps cables using hubs, routers, and maybe a Wi-Fi hotspot to boot, speak Japanese, travelled the world (or at least gone to Canada), teamed up with at least 7 other people to work on a project?web designer/graphic artist/video editor/php programmer/encoder/layout coder/ and I can do awhole bunch of other crap as well and no I dont have alot of times on my hands
No? Yes? Either way, I knew guys who were just like you when I was a Freshmen at college. They started off in the Computer Science department claiming they had |\/|@d c0d1ng $k!llz y0! And guess what, they all failed or switched majors!

If you really want to show off how smart you are, join Mensa! (If you can!)
5. Take responsibility for what you say and do! It's immature and shows you to be a total jerk. If you have offended someone, then apologize! Even I make Faux-Paus statements that irk others, and when I realize my mistake or get a nasty retort back, I apologize since it was not my intention to upset anyone. YOU on the other hand are INTENTIONALLY pissing off other people and making a total fool of yourself.
You sir, are a TROLL!
Phew, it felt good getting that all out!

Dude, I'm 19, and I'm an aspiring screenwriter - and before you go shouting at me that I don't know what I'm talking about, you should know that I'm a film student myself, and eat, breath, and think hollywood and the entertainment industry, so I'm not just spouting nonsense.
Do you know HOW many people in hollywood are exactly what you described -26-year-old-plus people who watch cartoons and go to "trekkie" conventions? Before you go mouthing off yourself, being rude to people who are trying to save you not only from humiliation, but also legal action for showing liscensed footage without permission and getting paid for it, remember that you ARE only 17, and you have NO idea what you're really talking about.
True, you may be all those things, but you're still an amateaur; the one reason people get away with music videos is that they're known as something called a "Found Footage" film, which, by nature, is not entirely illegal, so long as it is not used for direct monetary gain and at least some credit is given to the original artists. However, selling already-liscensed footage IS illegal; if I remember correctly a federal offense. Fansubs are not entirely illegal because, again, they are not made for monetary value, and usually are created before an American company buys the copyrights for english-language production. And even if the movie/show already IS owned by say, Viz, they usually don't care, because people will still buy the DVDs or Videos simply because A, it's easier than spending hours finding a site with a good connection & good copy of the file and downloading the video, and B, the audio and visual quality is ALWAYS better on the DVD or video, usually Dolby Surround Sound, plus you can choose the language, have special features, and it's more portable than a computer or external hard-drive.
Like I said, I'm only 19, and I know I have a lot to learn myself, but you have a lot more to learn before you even get out of high school and get into college. A word of advise - the world is RARELY as easy as you'd like to believe. You can still make you're ideas come to light, but you have to learn how to play by the rules and manipulate them, along with having enough hutspa and drive to take chances and identify oppurtunities to achieve your goals. It's mostly about how much effort you want to put into it; true, that's not always enough, but it definitely helps. But before you even think about starting out on your road to greatness, you have to get off your high-horse and realize that limitations ARE put on what you can do, and when people try to tell you them, they're usually just trying to help you, not shove it in your face.
Believe me, I'd LOVE to write and direct a movie based on, say, Starblazers, or Batman, but due to Copyright Laws, I need to get permission from the companies or authors who own said copyrights before I can even THINK about sitting down and typing them out. That doesn't mean I won't, but I realize at the moment it's a little too tough for a 19 year old sophomore in college to convince DC that I have a really good idea for a Batman movie, and that it'll be good; so I just have to bite the bullet, mark down my ideas, and working on getting my career started and get slightly known before I try anything HUGE.
Get out of school, learn what you really want to do with life, get a little life experience from college (which STILL doesn't even compare to real life), and THEN yell at people that you know more than them. You're only 17, just a pup; don't go thinking you can take the Alpha Male yet, kid.
Still, I hope you and your friends figure something out to do with your website, and get to have fun trying to become succesful. Just don't get in over your head, and don't let yourselves make bad decisions that could really endanger you later on.
