Aye I'm sorry, NGE is such a boring piece of Matrix-esque crap, I don't see why anyone should like that junk.
Scarlet, scarlet, grey, white, death.

And yet the Matrix came out AFTER it... hm... AND Ghost in the Shell... hmmmmm... can you say "major inspiration?" I know you can...

Actually, in terms of story, the Matrix took more from Megazone 23 than it did other animes...although there WERE definite nods to GitS (and I'm still convinced at least two nods to Fist of the North Star)

IMO
Trigun - Great Show gotta love it
Azumanga Daioh - Its just too funny
Outlaw Star- Its got everything you could want in an anime: robot chicks, cat girls, big guns, samurais, space fight, comedy, action one of the bests hands down

No doubt about it, Trigun is a must see. I would also have to suggest Cowboy Bebop. You MUST watch both of these, even if its just for a few episodes.

Excellent Choice and yes all should see Grave of the Fireflies.

My pic is The Wings of Honneamise. One of the most beautiful films I have seen with an awesome story as well.

Sailor Moon is a must see for all "magical girl" genre fans. It's amazing! The story line gets better and better with each season, and in my opinion I think Sailor Stars was the best season of all.

Honestly I cannot name one anime that deserves a mandatory viewing. Most of the shows other people have mentioned have put me to sleep.

Anyway the closiest one I can think of is Vision of Escaflowne. This show has a great story, great animation, and great characters. It's an all around great show.

The two main things that will turn off someone is the long noses and Hitomi's realistic personality *typical whiny teenage girl*.
