The closest you'll get to a modern portrayal of war will have to be sequences similiar to SEELE's (from NGE) none-Eva attack on NERV head quatars.

From waht I remember of the scene, you had masses of troops armed with what looked like modern tactical guns, and there were tanks, missile launchers, and ariel bombers.

Zipang follows an Japanese Ageis Missle cruiser as it goes back in time from 2005 to the day before Midway. The crew is forced to determine how involved in the war they are going to be and which side to help, but they have already changed the course of history by saving an IJN officer that was supposed to die. And what he learns of the future makes him want to use the modern missle cruiser for his own ends.

Some of the UC Gundam series are like that. 08th is probably the one with the most Vietnam-ish feel to it, though I think 0080 is better.

Vietnam is probably more specific to what I'm aiming for, but, is it just gundams fighting or is it actual soldiers for a lot of it? I'm not a fan of the series but if the footage works I'll make use of it.
