The reason I'm asking is I'm going to try to make an AMV and I might use American anime, but if I did would I be stoned and strung up by my neck? :? I wouldn't use American cartoons, just some of the wanna-be anime(I've seen a few that aren't too bad).

Thanks. Yes. I love the intro; it's so very cool. 8-)

Anyway, you won't get strung up by your neck, no. You'll be told that you can't put it here and have your thread locked / video deleted. That's all. There are other places you can put that sort of thing.

In LA, if you peek behind the curtain at many Japanese, or Chinesse eateries, that's exactly what you're getting.
Ironically since a lot of the Anime that we watch is farmed out to Korea and else where it's a similar story.

On topic: for the purposes of the site, some kind of line had to be drawn. That line is essentially: Animation produced for, and released in Japan. There are some rare exceptions, like FF, and if I remember correctly either Vampire D, or Hellsing.

Actually Avatar: The Last Airbender is animated out in Korea as well. They do the script in the U.S. and then all of the animation in Korea itself.

Man Korea must be pimpin with artists.

The oldest video on here is mostly american animation. This is a stupid subject and a stupid thread I'll use whatever I feel like in making a video using animation. Why stifle creativity just to be some kind of elitist prick. Make me a cartoon heroes video that actually uses spider man and superman instead of Lamely trying to put some jap character in their place.

It's not so much what we use as what is defined soley as anime. You can make with whatever the heck you want and be fine. That's not the real issue. The issue is where do you draw the line between anime and general cartoons.

Anime has become it's own culture in the sense that anime wishes to distinguish itself from the normal idiotic cartoons such as Spongebob, Fairlyodd parents, Foster's Home for imaginary Friends, and so forth.

Anime is anime not only because of the animation but the story line. Anime is represented as a more adult and generally more serious cartoon that makes people think and get into like they would any normal drama or comedy sitcom.

But what people have done is turned into something that it isn't. They say anime is only from Japan because it started out only in japan. But as the general appeal grew other countries started mimicing the feel of it. So we developed other countries versions of anime and people shunned it because they already assumed that anime came only from one place.

Anime isn't defined by the country of it's origin but by it's own plot, animation, and idea.

So, according to your logic, shows like Crayon Shin Chan aren't anime because they don't have any sort of non-cartoony plot or maturity to them?
