It was simply an extension of the series. It was like a number of episodes rolled into one.
How anyone could like the series and not like this movie is beyond me.
It's the first movie from an anime series I actually enjoyed. (Except for End of Eva. But who wants to have to see that again... You're mind and heart can only take so much)
