All that should matter is that you like the stuff.

If you want to get more into it and become a true elitist, I would suggest the following:

Read up on/pick some shows airing in Japan currently to watch, torrent HD fansubs and watch as soon as they are out.
Lurk 4chan.org's /a/ board and become a newfag. An Idlechan is fine too.
Find batch torrents for all those shows you have not seen, dl, marathon, delete, buy DVD's.
Go to anime cons.
Make AMV's, enter them in amv con contests, go to said cons.
???
