Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and Only Yesterday come to mind. Although KGNE sucks a lot.

cuz moeblob animes aren't rly grown-up series

can't really suggest anything here since i personally find all of the mentioned animes by brad rather pretentious and forced rather than realistic or grown-up. sometimes a highschool setting has nothing to do with how mature the show actually ends up being and handles its content. I mean Serial Experiments Lain is highschool, isn't it?

Ristorante Paradiso is the only show that comes to my mind that hasn't been mentioned already.

Rideback I believe they're all college students (akin to H&C or Ah My Goddess) I like the plot a lot too, but that's just me. Highly recomended... but that's just me :|

You can watch KGNE/ Rumbling Hearts on Hulu, I didn't particularly like it. Monster was horrible to me too ugh... It's like DBZ in a more 'grown up' setting. Every new episode is either a fight or just the buildup to a fight w/ a TON of angst. Huge waste of bandwidth (70 episodes?) I hate ppl that call it 'grown up' cuz it's not. Watch Rideback, it's awesome ^_^ if you ever lost something in your life it'd hit you like a ton of bricks. I also like Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora : looking up at the half-moon (TV) for the same reason, though it's more high school I think.

Also for the most philosophical anime I'd seen in years, try (Sins of) Cashern. Good stuff though it's not school related at all.
