It's customary to provide some kind of supporting evidence or reasoning when you say things like that.

Not once in the entirety of Evangelion was Asuka's name used in the same sentence as either "America" or "United States." Neither of her parents were American. She came over on a boat from Germany, and Unit 02 was configured for German.

Highly intelligent, she graduated from university at the age of 14 and boasted a higher synchronization rate than the Third Children in the early stages of actual combat. The suicide of her mother led her to develop an overly-aggressive character, and she maintained her mental balance by outwardly publicizing her superiority. Oh no, now you've done it...let me already repeat what Black Monarch will say to your (quite fine and correct) retort since I've heard it quite a few times from him:

"The Red Cross Book!?! I don't believe in something that doesn't acknowledge that Rei has emotions (even though it was written by people who helped MAKE the show). Rei is the most important person in the show...blah blah blah...I am right, you are wrong...Rei Rei Rei..."

Harsh? Perhaps, but I am quite sick of those retorts and arguments he (tries) to use.

Regardless of your (correct) retort, I happen to think the Red Cross Book is a great read for anyone interested in Eva and as said, was written by staff members of Gainax (who made Evangelion). Contrary to whatever Black Monarch or others say about it's credibility, when you read it and then look at the show and all of the things that happen in it...you can't help but realize that a lot of it does seem to make sense and is consistent...

hehe ^_^, I have heard it before too and thus I was reluctant too post the source in the first place, but since he asked...

And like dwchang, I would highly suggest anyone interested in EVA to read the RCB. Also people might want too look into eva trading cards which are also considered canon material, and answer such questions as "Why did Shinji choke Asuka in EOE?"

Why did he choke her? Unfortunately I'm waiting for ADV to pick the Renewal Eva (rumor has it they will) before I buy the series, so I don't fully understand everything in the movie with only having scene eps 1-7 (3-7 was in Vivo :O!!!).

Yeah, I know it'll sound *really* arrogant and I don't mean to be, but...I don't think Evangelion is that confusing at all. I can watch it now and for the most part understand the story elements (what is going on...and yes even all the messed up events in EoE) and the "deeper" stuff with Shinji and self-worth. Now I won't at all get haughty and say I figured it all out on my own. As Metro said, I read the RCB, thought about it, watched it again and it all just made sense.

Like we've both said...read it...watch the show and you'll see how much of it all fits together and well...makes sense.

To be honest, I hate when people say "evangeion is gay" or "evangelion is f'ed up" when they don't even put the effort/thought into it. Basically, I hate people wanting to be forcefed answers. I quite like how Evangelion made me think whether about the story or even Human Beings and society.

I know the argument will come that we shouldn't have to go look for answers or whatnot and to that I retort...yeah and at the same time you shouldn't be complaining that it's f'ed up then since you don't even bother to look into it...

Anyway...thus ends my Eva pseudo rant :-P

I read books when I want philosophy, deep stories, or thoughtful entertainment. For me, tv/anime/movies are just mindless fun. I love a good story in the anime I watch, but when it gets more complex than, say, the Patlabor movies or your standard drama, it pretty much turns me off and I go look for something else, cuz' that's not what I enjoy. For me, I got hooked after the first few episodes of EVA because my main interest was "what the heck were the EVA units?". Half way through it just seemed to start meandering and once I got lost that was it. Hated the show ever since.

But that's just me. :) I don't think bad things about EVA fans, because Macross 7 fans are lower on the respect scale, I think, and I happen to be one of those . . . . . .

Because it's not that simple...I mean don't get me wrong people can enjoy it for that, but I feel (and well...a lot of others including the creators) that there is a lot underneath the surface/story. Episodes 25/26 alone show that it's not that simple.

Given, I know Mr.Oni will come in here and yell about how it sucks and whatnot (which I'd appreciate if he didn't), but at the same time a lot of people feel that way just as you do and same with how I feel. At the very least, at least we enjoy the same show .

first of all , I was making a joke at the expense of you wasting your life over-analyzing something that is essentially ...... a cartoon.

second of all , just to let you in on a little secret, Epsiodes 25 and 26 sucked worse than pokemon. They were a feeble attempt to rationalize the whole series by confusing and boring the hell out of the viewer . A complete waste of time, in my book.
I probably would have hated the series if it ended w/25and 26 ..... thank God for EOE.

Actually, It's more along the lines of this: "The RCB explicitly states that Rei lacks emotions. The ACTUAL FUCKING SHOW very clearly shows her expressing a variety of emotions, albeit not very often. Ergo, The RCB contains information that just plain condradicts the series. Also, the April 2003 issue of Newtype Magazine contains interviews with people who worked on the show, many of whom freely admitted that they did not even see the entire series. Given the choice between the two, I'd sooner believe the actual events of the actual show than a book written by people who might not have seen the whole series."

And FYI, although Rei is my favorite character, I don't think of her as the most important one. Shinji is the primary character, Misato is secondary, Rei is tertiary, and Asuka is quaternary. Don't pretend to know what other people think. It only makes you look like you have to insult other people because you don't have enough info to defend yourself.
Ask me about my secret stash of videos that can't be found anywhere anymore.
