Numerous theories for this one

1. If you're referring to his attitude about women, that's in part tied into seeing his fiance get killed fighting (it was covered in the Episode Zero manga)

2. He's just a stubborn ass

3. He's another victim of the fact the Wing writers decided, rather than use human characters, they'd just fall back on archetypes and he got dealt the classic 'Difficult to be around loner' card
