I think Chan is also used by boys for close personal freinds Mendou in Urusei Yatsura has a rival and they call each other by thier childhood names shu chan and ton chan. Also Viz sucks ass because they Translate P chan in ranma as cute pig.

Yeah... seeing as how Chan is mostly said by girls.... it would have to be a special occasion for guys to say it. But yeah, I think Chan overall just means friend. So saying Sakura-Chan is like saying "My friend Sakura"..... nah... its more like a title meaning friend! Well... more like Dear Friend.
