Ah yes. Umi. Nice movie.

Anyway, Ah! My Goddess question: In the opening, there is a character who is present in both the manga and the movie, but conspicuously absent in the OVA. In fact, the English voice actors even comment on this. Who is it?

I remember the commentary mentioning "Peorth" when the character you mentioned shows up, but they're incorrect. The actual character shown is Mara, who doesn't show up in the movie, either. (Peorth has blue squares on her forehead and cheeks, Mara has two red lines on her forehead)

I was under the impression that it was Peorth, but either way, you're correct. Take it.

Ah, spring. Romance is in the air... So to celebrate, match at least six of these ten famous anime couples with the people who provided their voices. To make it a bit harder, the seiyuu lists include everyone who's played the (Japanese) role, including "younger versions," though the seiyuu most associated with the role is usually listed first.

Couples:
(a) Belldandy & Morisato Keiichi
(b) Deedlit & Parn
(c) Hououji Fuu & Ferio
(d) Kamiya Kaoru & Himura Kenshin
(e) Kanzaki Hitomi & Van Fanel
(f) Kinomoto Sakura & Li Shaoran
(g) Lina Inverse & Goury Gabriev
(h) Miyazawa Yukino & Arima Souichirou
(i) Sailor Moon/Tsukino Usagi & Tuxedo Kamen/Chiba Mamoru
(j) Tendo Akane & Saotome Ranma

Seiyuu:
(0) Mitsuishi Kotono/Araki Kae & Furuya Tohru/Ogata Megumi
(1) Fujitani Miki & Suzukaze Mayo
(2) Sakamoto Maaya & Seki Tomokazu/Kamei Yoshiko
(3) Hidaka Noriko & Hayashibara Megumi/Yamaguchi Kappei
(4) Kikuko Inoue/Touma Yumi/Shionoiri Mio/Okamura Akemi & Kikuchi Masami/Ogata Megumi
(5) Tange Sakura & Kumai Motoko
(6) Enomoto Atsuko & Suzuki Chihiro
(7) Kasahara Hiroko & Yamazaki Takumi/Touma Yumi
(8) Touma Yumi/Niiyama Shiho & Kusao Takeshi/Hayashi Nobutoshi
(9) Hayashibara Megumi & Matsumoto Yasunori

D-1 Rurouni Kenshin
E-2 Vision of Escaflowne
F-5 Cardcaptor Sakura
G-9 Slayers
H-6 Kareshi Kanojo no Jijyo

That should be eight. Unfortunately, I haven't seen either Lodoss, or the one couple C were in.

Very good, Cliff!

The last two are:
B-8 Record of Lodoss War
C-7 Magic Knight Rayearth

Compiling these, I was surprised how often Ogata Megumi and Touma Yumi showed up. I expected Ms. Hayashibara to show up a few times, but not the other two.

Anyway, very well done, and the thread is yours!

Alright, this next question comes from the TV series (NOT the OAV series) Magical Girl Pretty Sammy (aka Magical Project S) -- sort of.

If you have the video releases (and DEFINITELY the DVD release) of this series, one of the last extras provided was a preview trailer of the (hold on to your insulin) . . .

MAHOU SHOUJO PRETTY SAMMY
THE MOTION PICTURE

The question has two parts:

a) What was the secondary title (printed AND spoken in English by the announcer) of the Pretty Sammy movie, and

b) According to the preview, WHEN was the motion picture to be shown in theaters (in Japan)?

M'kay, time to bring in a second question to the mix. Actually, it's early, but THAT'S all right!

Q1:

Q2:
This question comes from the series Vandread -- again, sort of.

In the first episode, our young hero Hibiki meets our young heroine Dita -- not necessarily a good thing, as both come from planets with populations of single gender. Actually, Hibiki's downright terrified of Dita (afraid she'll EAT him!), while Dita's simply DELIGHTED at meeting her first "Alien" (or "Uchuujin-san (sp?)," take your pick). As part of her own "first contact" protocol, she silently (but with the help of a little BGM  ) makes a short series of motions with ONE part of her body. This series of motions is mimicked by Hibiki, much to Dita's Joy! (NOTE: Before you think this series of motions is ecchi or hentai, it isn't, so Don't Go There!!)

Now this particular series of motions is a direct and unmistakeable reference to a famous Hollywood film. The question: What film is being referenced by the series of motions performed by Dita and Hibiki?

I'm going to take an utter wild stab at this one, having never seen Vandread, but you've dropped enough hints to make me try.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind?

And to prove I'm a child of the eighties, the hand motions should be (all with the right hand):
1 - Hand palm down, parallel to floor, fingers together, thumb out
2 - Same as #1, but palm angled upwards
3 - Hand closed to fist
4 - Open hand to #1, return to #3
5 - Open hand to #1, rotate wrist 90 degrees clockwise (i.e. ready for handshake)

:D That's okay, I'm a product of the Seventies. Oddly enough, I never saw Close Encounters of the Third Kind when it was in theaters -- too busy watching Star Wars about a dozen times. :D

Correct on ALL counts (including, if I remember correctly, the hand motions Francois Truffaut's character demonstrated, a sign-language representation of the famous five-note tune from the film). Dita's five motions w/ the right hand are different, but there's no mistaking the reference.

As for the Pretty Sammy question,

a) the secondary title for the PS movie was God Boys vs. Magical Girls.

b) According to the preview, the release date was July of 1999 . . . NOT! (phony trailer -- there never was a Pretty Sammy movie  ) On a side note, if there really WAS a Pretty Sammy movie released in Japanese theaters in that month, it would have had some SERIOUS competition, as My Neighbors the Yamadas (Studio Ghibli film released in 7/99) was LOSING in the box office to Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (released on 7/99 in Japan). And if the Pretty Sammy movie had lasted through July, it would have also contended w/ the Shoujo Kakumei Utena motion picture (released 8/99).

JHU Battousai, GO FOR IT!!
