taken from the evaotaku FAQQ) Is Maya Ibuki a lesbian? Does she have feelings for Ritsuko?
A) Yes. Although Maya looks up to Ritsuko as her "sempai", there was clearly an intention to portray Maya's feelings towards Ritsuko as something much more complicated with deliberate gay overtones. When the phantom Rei/Ritsuko embraces Ritsuko during the film, The End of Evangelion, Maya lets a gasp of "ecstacy" escape (as described by Anno). Further, in the Newtype filmbook for End of Evangelion, Maya's final lines before she reverts to LCL are surrounded by hearts. It's clear that Gainax intended Maya to be a character with, at the very least, decisively lesbian tendancies.

Argh! Memory fading with my old (ha) age. Damn! Good of you for remembering that. Perhaps I didn't want to remember it since Maya is one of the few characters in the show I like (I for one think the majority of characters in Eva aren't supposed to be "liked" perse since they are all exaggerations of qualities we all possess).Pierrot Le Fou wrote:The phantom Ritsuko also typed "I need you" on Maya's computer. ;D

Now that you mention it, you're right. All the characters have the ability to be liked, but at the same time, they all possess vices that make you want to hate them.
Misato-raging alcoholic, sex-fiend
Shinji-overly depressed and underconfident
Asuka-just a plain bitch
Rei-emotionless and seemingly cold
Ritsuko-also a know it all bitch
etc....
The techs were about the ONLY really likeable characters in that show and now we have Maya who's a lesbian... not to sound like a hater, but... DAMN she was cute.

Yeah well fundamentally at it's core, as has been said, Evangelion is about people. Although we may not possess all these characteristics to a T, we do have traces of each of them. Of course, each of us can relate to one more than the other, but I think all of us have a little of each. That's why I like the show so much, it sort of tells you a little about yourself.Jiima wrote:Now that you mention it, you're right. Well, other than the long-haired tech, Aoba (?), the other two have their own vices. You mentioned Maya's, although you could debate she has others like her innocence (as seen in EoE and her inability to fight and other times when she is disgusted). Hyuga also loves Misato, but doesn't do anything about it. Misato also steps on him all the time (makes him do her laundry, etc.), so you could say he's a "wimpy" guy similar to Shinji.

Wow, you just reminded me of something else I found interesting in Eva. I believe this is 99% true. There is one character in the entire show who is "sane." Kaji.El Banana wrote:All of the characters in Eva needed help.
Kaji knows everything about what is going on and yet is fine with it. I think the scene where he is watering his watermelons while an Angel is attacking demonstrates how content he is with his life regardless of what he knows. He also accepts his fate in his murder. I think Anno purposely made a character like Kaji for Shinji to interact with. IIRC, because of what Kaji says, Shinji goes back to fight.

Yeah, you'll notice he's the least developed character on there almost. He was pretty cool too. anybody found any vices for him? He seemed like a character that didn't mature much past his teenage years, he carries around that guitar and does his air guitar riffs during break, he seems like a guy in his late teens, except that he's like... early thirties, late twenties. Could this possibly be a vice?dwchang wrote:Well, other than the long-haired tech, Aoba (?), the other two have their own vices.
