High school is more like the 15-18 range.

Asuka and Rei are in 7th or 8th grade.

I'm in 9th grade right now and the girls I see in daily life are generally 14-16. Asuka & Rei are suposedly 14, though in a few occurances I'd say they look 16.

Yeah, Shark steak!

I can imagine Rei eating ramen... 'cause she did that once... and it looked so damn cool, that was like ultimate fan service. Um anyway, if Rei indulges in any dessert, I could imagine her eating ice cream cake.... I don't know why.

Isn't it true that high schools only go for three years (the equivalent of our 10th-12th grades) in Japan?

Ummm.... probably. Rei, Shinji, & Asuka where probably in middle school then. That can't change the age though, age is the most important factor anyway.

I think they are i middle school since they are only about 14, but i could be wrong since this is japan we talking about and they seems to have similar schooling techniques but they can have different types of grade level, mayb more advance o something...

Unless Japanese high schools go for 6 years (7-12), all the pilots were in Middle school.

and why is it so important that they be in middle school (or whatever they'd be in if they were 14) it's not like it's an important part of the series
the important part is that they are all in innocent and vulnerable states of mind and still don't know what they will do... not that they're in middle/high school.

The fact that they were CHILDREN was a VERY important theme in some parts of some episodes - like Shinji's reaction to Misato's reaction to Kaji's death in episode 21. Also, if Shinji and Asuka were adults, there would be no reason for them to stay with Misato. Come to think of it, the whole Misato-Shinji dynamic and the Kaji-Asuka dynamic would totally change if Shinji and Asuka were adults. Rei-Gendo would take on a very different feel as well.
