No, there are at least 5 of us. I'm another (also a major fan of Vegeta and Trunks, so I'm sure you'll love the end of the Android saga), and 3 of my close real-life friends adore the anime and get a kick out of the cute/funny scenes mixed in with the drama and action. I know a lot more over the internet, also female, also big fans. They just don't hang out here that often. ^_~
You mean... I'm not alone? *wipes away tears of joy from eyes*

But yeah... I think that another problem with getting attached to the characters is that, if you, like me, just jumped into DBZ without watching plain ol' Dragon Ball first, then yeah, it takes a while to get to know the characters. Most of these people already had connections which I could only guess at. I had to force myself to watch through the death of Raditz right at the beginning--after he died, I started to understand the characters a bit more. It's a show that you have to watch for a long time, I think--you have to see the new connections develop. Actually, I think it was the Gohan/Piccolo connection and the Goku/King Kai thing that really got me addicted...

Plus, the transformation of Vegeta from bad guy to good rocks. There's a ton of character development--it's generally just subtle.

If possible, watch it subbed. Gohan actually sounds like a cute little kid that way.....

Except in those first few eps...where his crying sounds like nails on a chalkboard

Sounding off on DBZ:
OK, it's overrated, so are a lot of animes (I'd list titles, but that might only make things worse.)
The thing is, contrary to what a lot of people think, it's not the great Satan of anime. So you feel it brings in idiots to anime, wouldn't be the first show, won't be the last.
It's like J-0080 puts it best...it's not as awful as tales say, it's just kind of average (although personally I think the Bardock & Trunks side stories were damned good additions to the franchise)

DB > DBZ

Post by Hajime_Saitou » Fri Sep 19, 2003 1:06 pm

I personally think that Dragon Ball is far better than Dragon Ball Z. In DBZ they shifted from being a comedy series like DB and became more of an action series. One of the things that really messed DBZ up for me was the horrible, terrible super saiyan thing. ~_-. Immediately after Goku went super saiyan, they had to make the enemies that much tougher, making almost all the non-super saiyan characters completely useless in the battles. An example of an attempt to make episodes involving the, now useless, characters was the Garlic Jr. Saga. And then theres always this famous thing in the frieza saga:

Frieza: "Blast, I held back too much energy.
Goku: "So you couldnt go through with it - killing us both to win."
Frieza: "You fool. I give this planet 5 mins till it explodes. O yeah and I can breathe in outerspace and, you can't.
Goku: "ahhhahhahhhahhahhhahh"

5 "Z" minutes later: (aka about 15 episodes.)

Frieza: "ahahhahahhahahhhahhhhhahhhh" this planet is a tough old bird. I give it 2 more minutes.

2 "Z" minutes later: (aka about 7 episodes later)

Goku: J00 fool! KABOOM! *Frieza "Dies". and by "Dies", I mean gets written back into the story in a couple more episodes.

Next episode:

Namek explodes and Goku is shown still on the planet while the planet explodes and "Dies". And by "Dies", I mean gets written back into the story with the new power to teleport at will.

~_-

* This is just my opinion of DBZ. Please don't take it personally.*

Dragon Ball, in my opinion, is a much more quality series. They utilize all the characters instead of adding in something like the power to go Super Saiyan to make all the "Non super saiyans " worthless.

thats so true. and also dbz isnt a little over rated its WAY over rated i dont see what ppl see in it i mean the animation is horible, the story is ok but incredibly repetitive, they repeat the frams and breath for 15 of the 25 min of the episode and it takes them like 30 episodes to kill one person.

Yeah... that's the glory of anime. There's so much of it to choose from. I mean, personally I don't see how anyone can get into Kare Kano (except for the fact that it's Gainax), but there are people out there who really like it. And there are redeeming qualities to almost all shows, no matter if you actually like them or not.

Hehe, Savia might have something to say about that.

I haven't seen it, but so far that seems like something I'd really like.

In general, again, subjectivity is key. The ability to put yourself in another's shoes is also beneficial. But at the very least, I'd hope that people would at least respect others' opinions and likes.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Yah... I kinda figured I'd be stepping on toes by singling a series out, especially since Savia's ava is, y'know, from that series...

*shrug* There were actually one or two eps from there that I liked. The problem was that they were too few and far between, and when I look at the series as a whole there just didn't seem to be enough plot. I understand that the manga goes on farther--the series ended right when it was beginning to get interesting. If it hadn't, who knows--maybe even I'd like it. And even though it didn't thrill me, I watched the whole thing anyway. Every anime deserves a chance.

I had the same problem with Rayearth, actually--it just seemed like nothing happened during the first arc until the last two eps. Whether I'll say the same about the second arc remains to be seen...

Of course I would still rather watch an ep of DBZ than one of Thundrcats. That is a good 3x worse.
