I think I converted most of them by now. Those who don't like it don't bother me, or if they bother me, I usually prove them wrong and make them like it.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

My close friends like anime, mostly because the cloe ones share the same interests and tastes as I do - so whatever I like I can be sure they'll at least be interested in. So far, they've liked what I like (though they have some favorite anime that I don't really care for myself). As for gender, I've known mostly girls who like anime in college. There was no club, but the Japanese beginning class my roommate took was (according to her) 4/5 female, with only a few guys. And of them, all but two of the girls were taking it because they'd seen anime. I've only met two guys in 'real life' who liked anime, one of them thought it was 'okay' and the other loved it as much as me. But he was rather young and hadn't gotten to see more than the dubbed versions on television and for rent near him.
Since I didn't take Japanese (I took Spanish), I missed out on the 'mock' anime club the school had. The few 'anime' fans I met were through my roommate, and she was the first to introduce me to anime (at 19 >.< ). Now it's just a matter of converting my old friends so they know what all the 'fuss' is about. So far only one has resisted - and we don't have much in common anyway, so it's no great loss.
