Yeah... chances are, the kid won't be able to read by the time she is five, and certainly not fast enough to read subtitles, even if it is a kid show. If you want to introduce the kid that soon, then go with dubs--Transformers, maybe, or Pokemon, etc. You might even be able to get away with showing her Inu Yasha (though the plot might be too complex at that age).
The other thing is, I think on average peoples' attention spans are that of their age--a five-year-old would only have a five-minute attention span. So pick something where lots of stuff happens.

Definitely sstart with dubs!
My first anime was Totoro...it IS children's anime so I'd definitely recommend that. My five year old sister likes anime. She watches Kenshin (NOT the OVA!!!) with me. But then again, she's pretty strange. Her favorite movie when she was two years old was Jurassic Park.

I'd suggest Evangelion, but 5 is a bit young. Actually, I'd suggest a lot of things, but 5 is a bit young, I'd say wait till 13... but I guess it is a great idea to start 'em young, so, my suggestions would be -
My Neighbour Totoro
Princess Mononok, Spirited Away, all the Miyazaki films
I can't think of much else, sorry.

I know tons of people that saw it at around age 13, I think there are boundless advantages to seeing Evangelion at that age. Do the people that see it at that age (me included) understand it? I don't know, I understood all of the basic plot, but it didn't really affect my life (outside of an 'entertainment' oriented perspective, like philosophically) until I was older (15, I'm still not 16 myself, I'm on the verge though, this March) so I guess I didn't get it the first bunch of times around. Still I bet there are people that "got" it at that age, but I don't know anyway. Still, I consider it the perfect series for people, with the healthy dose of action & drama, with some human introspection, an overall humanist messege, and all the very good looking women, how can you go wrong? Too bad I submitted it to sensei for Japanese club and she rejected it.... I mean I would have nderstanded if it was about violence or something, but Sensei rejected it based on the sole fact that Shinji doesn't live with his father...Otohiko wrote:Even considering my intellectual-oriented upbringing, I think I wouldn't have really understood Evangelion until I was about 16 or so.

Yea, I don't know, it's a tough question and depends on the person. Frankly, I think I'd be too scared to care if I were 13 heh. To be honest, I don't know if I would've 'got' the story, but I would definitely be scared. Heck, I found it pretty unsettling at 19, which is damn near the most desensitized age
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…
