Some of the story ideas in Kikaider weren't bad, but they were portrayed poorly.
The ideas of Kikaider; like robots with souls, personalities, and free would have been better if they had been animated in the style of something like Ghost in the Shell or Armitage.
Kikaider took classic anime concepts and watered them down into a cartoony show.
To a lesser extent I have the same bif with YuGiOh. The underling story is about dark magic, soul stealing, revenge, power struggle, cults, multiple personalities, and even features a bit of murder with past trauma. This comes out a little more in the manga, but not to much more.
