Unorganized thoughts:

It is easier (limited in my knowledge) to sub than dub.
Sub: japanese script to english with some editing to make sense
Dub: japanese script to english to script edited to make sense, timing, etc...

The voice acting industry in Japan is much bigger and better than its American counterpart.

Good Dubs: Nadesico (better than the sub), Kare Kano (sub and dub are almost word for word), Inu-yasha, Cowboy Bebop, etc...

Qualities of Dubing to Concider:
- Voice Actor's Voice and Acting
- The Script

A theory: Japanese is more expressive than American English.

Sub or Dub? Depends if it is good or not.

A
Don't forget to include the director. That can sometimes influence the quality of the dubbing.

ummm.....
i don't hate dubs . you can call me a netrual.
i mean all the dvds i rent from the third ear are in english but other animes which i watch i watch in sub.

about cowboy bebop - anybody who watched in japanese , didn't really watch it. ( the voice of spike is also the voice of the married guy in X tv.... spike - the new york times edtior )

the thing i personally have against subs which doesn't really bug me , but still..... is that some of them are really bad quality , but that's a disappering thing and all the new anime subs are good quality.

and yes i started to watch dubs ( cowboy bebop + escaflowne ) , switched to subs and now i'm mixing.

Dubs aren't always the gateway to anime addiction. I'm a fairly new-school anime fan, who got into anime through bittorrent. So I came into anime with subtitling and I've never seen any reason to change. (I was used to subs before tho, I've always watched a lot of foreign cinema.) It's not that I dislike dubs, it's just I prefer to listen to the original japanese audio. If a DVD has both English and Japanese audio I'll always select the subtitles. I don't have any trouble reading them fast enough - but I can see why some people prefer dubs if they do.

Maybe it's a Britain thing too. In most dubs the voice actors are American. Nothin against American accents lol, I don't mind them in American films, but I find them offputting in anime. Characters tend to be given cliched voices equivalent to their character types - Evangelion seems a fairly good (bad) example of this. Gendo and Asukas accents are both quite garrish and cartoony. Maybe my real problem with this is that the accents tend to be based on American cliches rather than Japanese cliches, which perverts the original intentions of the anime, and adds implied meaning not there in the original form.

But, to be fair, with the advent of DVD, it's a fairly moot point. We can all have out cake and eat it. :D

I prefer dubs because I prefer to watch the show instead of reading the subtitles. Subtitles are definitely closer to the real show though. I prefer to watch with dubs then with subs so I get to see what happens and then know what they are actually saying.
