Eh, yeah, I'm a voice actor. I haven't done much worth mention yet, but I have managed to already meet a few high-profile people, probly the most obscure of whom was Barbara Goodson, who did the voice for Rita Repulsa. Among more noteworthy parts.... But every single person I've met in the industry has been wonderfully nice. Therefore, I must conclude you need to be nice to become a voice actor.
I've heard many panelists say you need to develop a backing in stage acting or 'true' acting before making your demo cd's. Nuh uh. I haven't heard anyone off a panel say that; not my VA professor, not other seiyuu, not the people who work in the studio.
Here is a bit of vague advice coming from someone utterly unqualified to give it - try different voices whenever you're alone, don't do things to damage your voice (smoke, drink a lot, shout all the time, etc.), listen to yourself and other people talk so you know what manipulation of your tone creates what effect, get to know anyone in any acting industry because everyone has contacts, do any free jobs you can get, THEN make your demo tape and get an agent. If you're not in the Hollywood area, some very specific NY parts, or, yes, Canada, you will be if you're gonna seriously work.
Is this post long? Sorry...
