Shows that I really liked this year:

Beck. Definitely. One of my favorites that's airing this year, I love the characters in it, and while the animation isn't exactly my favorite style, the awesome plot and music more than make up for that.

Bleach. I can't get enough of this show. From the opening theme song all the way through to the end of the show it's like a booster shot of pure awesome.

School Rumble. Holy shit this show is hilarious. My favorite comedy show from this year by FAR.

Yakitate Japan. The entire concept is so silly, yet it works for some strange reason. I don't know what it is exactly that's so entertaining about this show, all I know is I love it.

2x2 = Shinobuden. Another great comedy show. The Christmas scene with Kaede asking Shinobu who she likes was classic. I rolled on the floor, it was that funny.

Aishiteru ze Baby. Despite a slightly worse than subpar ending, the show taken in it's entirety was one of the years drama highlights in my opinion.

Elfen Lied. Another not so great ending, this one definitely needs another season so we aren't left in such suspense. Beautiful artwork, interesting characters, and a hell of a lot of gore raised this show to a good level of awesome.

Genshiken. A hilarious look at the lives of otakus. For any anime fan who is even slightly "hardcore" about it, this show is an absolute must.

Maria-sama Ga Miteru. I haven't seen past episode 7 or 8 but from what I have seen this seems to be a very good shoujo series. Definitely one I need to finish watching.

Monster. Duh. It's only one of the best shows ever created. I really don't know what to say about it except that it freaking rules and everyone who's anyone should be watching it.

Yuugo. Another one that I don't know why it entertained me as much as it did. I just found it to be highly addictive, it kept me glued to my computer monitor.

Kita He - Diamond Dust Drops. This show was very good. Despite only spending a few episodes on each character, you really felt like you could empathize with them and their problems. Good stuff here.

The shows that I hated:

Cosprayers. Pure crap. I didn't even know it was physically possible for a show to suck so much ass. I mean, Avenger was pretty terrible but this tops even that on the crappiness scale. Boring characters, a stupid incomprehensible plot, boring animation. Just boring on every level imagineable.

Gantz. For a show that could have been awesome, this was such a tragic failure. The characters pissed me off, the plot was very retarded, and the animation quality was bad, bad, bad. I really can't say anything good about it.

Madlax. Another shit fest courtesy of the people who gave us Avenger and Noir. Par for the course as far as this company goes: Great soundtrack, boring plot. It's just not very good.

Mezzo DSA. I don't think any list of the worst shows of the year can not include this one. It blew. The action scenes were somewhat interesting I guess, but not enough to save this from crappiness.

Ragnarok the Animation. Maybe it's because I had way too high of hopes for this show since I used to play the game a LOT, but it disappointed me so much that just thinking about it pisses me off.

Whew that was quite a list.

oo thread's back up.. good thing too. Since the first anime I'd like to mention is..

SunaBouzu - hell ya, seen 4 eps and I love this series so far. Its a hilarious comedy/action and it does great on both fronts. Set in the future where the world has become a wastland and its about a debt collector trying to make ends meet. Seems that collecting debts in the future is a lotta hard work.. with all those gangs with heavy firepower roving about.. and competing debt collectors.. and a tank.. I'm soo making an AMV to this :D

Monster - Very good suspensful series, I like it for much the same reasons as Otohiko stated earlier.

Mai Hime - I'm enjoying this series even though I'm annoyed with some aspects of it. Its got some awesome music and I'm digging some of the characters. The story is good too.

Gantz - An interesting series about a being called gantz that reserructs the currently deceased only to 'expermint' on them by sending them on missions to kill various funky looking aliens. Most of the people involved are very anti-heroish, which means to say they're basically just bystanders forced into bad situations. I thought it was a good series with a few bad moments. Still waiting to see how they wrap the series up although I wish they had continued it (Manga wise its still going).

A vampire cat-girl? Oh hell yea! 8-)

Luckily, that really cute girl concept is backed up with some pretty interesting plot that's dark and mysterious combined with some comedic scenes (practically any scene that has a falling pot hitting someone's head  ).

My brain hurts, so I'll talk about series I didn't like in 2004 later.
I'd Definatly agree with the Tsukuyomi~Moon Phase I've introduced a couple of freinds to it and they agree with me. I cann't wait to see what kind of extras they put on the US release.

Tenchi Muyo OVA3
Cann't wait till it comes out in the states, I just hope they don't use the voice acter for Ryoko that they used for her in GXP

Last but not least(for now)
Sayuki season 3 and movie

Witch Hunter Robin - I believe this permiered in 2004, yes? ^^; Anyway, I loved this anime. While many people dislike it for its slow beginning, I enjoyed the plot and who concept of it. The characters were really deep and all their personailites were nicely fleshed out. The character development was top-notch and the way everything came together was perfect. Plus, the music wasn't too bad either.

Wolf's Rain - I have to agree about playing "Heaven's Not Enough" By: Steve Conte for hours. I love that song to no end! And that's part of the reason why Wolf's Rain was awesome: The music. Like Cowboy Bebop, this series always used music to really protray the mood of the scene. The animation was stunning here and again the concept was pretty original and deep, as was the whole plot.

Wow, and suddenly the Monster fans are showing up. :D

I have to, somewhat shyly, backup the suggestions on Beck and School Rumble. They both seem to cover my other requirements from anime (the former for stuff relating to music, even if I unfortunately am not too huge a fan of the music in the series...; the latter for just comedy and slapstick, stuff I need to relax the nerves every once in a while.)
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Well those premiered in the U.S. in 2004, but I'm mostly looking for series/OVAs/movies that premiered in Japan in 2004.

Oooohh, sorry! I thought you meant the anime that premiered in the U.S. in 2004. ^^; Sorry!

Then I'll go with Tenchi Muyo! OVA 3. :D Gotta love how Ryoko treats little Ryo-Ohki like a little sister.

I think it came out in Japan in December 2003, but we'll forgive you.

I'm going to second Bleach, Beck and Yakitate Japan for pretty much the same reasons as have already been mentioned. I'd also like to second Gantz, though it's definitely one that not everyone would like. I tend to love mindf* shows (FLCL, Paranoia Agent, Lain...), so Gantz is right up my alley. Sure, it's kind of hard to sympathize with the main character, especially at first, but at the same time--darnit, these characters are humans. They're selfish and unheroic--and I love 'em for it.

Sorry I just had to record my thoughts of Melody of Oblivion somewhere before I forget them I thought this anime was some kind of sattire of the Republican- Democratic party! No, really, it's not a popular view but the way I see it, the Monsters were mindless trolls just like the Democrats, and the Meros warriors were simply empty minded wannabees like republicans! Really, it made no sence and caused no good from them fighting yet they did! Cuz the dam idiotic nerd incisted on it! *Please don't mod this as this is a PERFECT summary of the show* N I thought it was SO true that it's irony nearly KILLED me!.... oh and it goes a little overboard with the 'adult' situations... stupid JC Staff... and everybody dies in the end but the dork... stupid Gainax.
