Akira (human's quest for power)

Now and Then, Here and There (the nature of war and situational morality)

Cowboy Bebop (loneliness and the human condition)

Haibane Renmei (the afterlife)

Note: I haven't listed Lain or Eva because I haven't seen either. I don't really intend to at the moment because mind-bending anime isn't my favorite category of entertainment. It is interesting, though.

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Revolutionary Girl Utena
Haibane Renmei
Chickyuu Koumei Arjuna
Perfect Blue

If not phillosopical (sp), they at least do get you thinking for yourself. Unless you just watch for the pretty colors...

I'd have to go with Neon Genesis Evangelion. The show may get a bit messed up and totally baffle your mind from time to time (like last few eps and The End of Eva movie), but there is where your thought provoking ideas about it's point and purpose come from. So yeah, Eva, or if you mean thought provoking in another sense, Case Closed/Detective Conan is a good one since it makes you think as the show goes along itself. Being a detective show and all. Hehe. ^.^

i just wanted to see if anyone else agrees with me on this one (hopefully i am not the only one).

I was a little confused by the last episode of Mahoromatic, spoiler so it is white where it is in the future and suguru is all old and then Mahoro shows up and then blah. I was a little confused and watched it a couple more times and i still am not sure what happened.

So...do you crap in your pants EVERYTIME you watch it, or just that first one?
Oh, so THAT's why my pants are so squishy when I lie down :?

Yes Jin Roh was up there in deepness. It's an ethics and political lesson with a fable twist.

Big O I and II made me think a lot about how we perceive what's reality and what is just a stage. To this day there are still parts of that show that I don't clearly understand. Seeing it multiple times helps.

Haibane Renmei is definately the most challenging for me philosophically. It's like near impossible to see the show as simply black and white. The show gives the message that sometimes the things in your life can't be controlled. Later, however, the message changes into despite how many obstacles are thrown at you, there's always a way to cross over them.

.hack//SIGN isn't quite as challenging but still pretty confusing for me. Sometimes the dialogue and actions of a character are seemingly random, but once you look deeper, you'll see how the characters develop. Tsukasa seems to say things at inappropriate times or may often seem to act strange, but if you think about his life in the real world and his personality, you can begin to fill in the gaps. Not only that, but the show also talks about questioning your alliances, yet another part that's just not simply black and white.

Good answer.

Well to start, Galaxy Express 999, in a fantasy/imagination stimulant sort of way.

Demon City Shinjuku and Doomed Megalopis, in a "PLEASE GOD DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN *while on hands and knees*" sort of way.

Armitage III and Ghost in the Shell, in a realistic/possible future way.

And Gall Force: Eternal Story in a "the origin of man" way.

Episode three of Memories: Cannon Fodder. Seeing a society completely based around war is quite interesting.
