The Japanese version of Macross...

After growing up with Robotech, The Macross Saga, with all the backstory, beautiful musical score, constant drama mixed with the occasional funny moment, and everything else that made it wonderful (not including Minmei's voice  ), I thought that the original would be even better.

:!: EEEEEEEERNK! WRO~NG!!!!
The show had almost NO backstory, aside from "In the year 1999, an alien spaceship landed on Earth," and ten years later the Zentron show up out of nowhere, saying... hey, let's check this planet; oh look! there's a ship down there, let's go chase it around the galaxy. At least in Robotech, they had a REASON to go look for it - to get it back after Zor sent it to Earth and use it against the Invid.

The music was terrible, and several times when there should have been dramatic music to make the scenes more intense, THERE WAS NONE! Maybe the only thing I liked about the audio in that show was Minmei's songs.

The other thing I loved: Oh yes, the ship was taken command of by the UN, so OF COURSE 99% of the crew is going to be JAPANESE!!! NOT FRIGGIN LIKELY!!! At least in Robotech there was more of a diverse group. Some were from Canada, or the US, or England - even Emil Lang, from whom I get my name, was from Germany, and Captain Gloval was Russian! Thank you, you overly nationalistic, xenophobic, and unimaginative Japanese creators, for once again stroking your egos by saying that only your people and maybe two Americans are capable to piloting an alien spaceship. At least Star Trek had Chekov and Scotty, and Spock wasn't even human entirely!

To add insult to injury, the story was originally meant to be a "light-hearted, comedic war show." NO! BAD JAPANESE WRITERS! That show reaked of pain over lost comrads, strong anti-war overtones, angst from unrequited love, and even the origin of humanity and what it means to BE human; and you're going to try and make that into a comedy!? Apparently, they didn't realize they had a powerful Anime classic in the making until about 3/4 of the way through.

If you loved Robotech, The Macross Saga, do not, I repeat, DO NOT get the original Super Dimensional Fortress Macross... I suggest Macross Plus, Macross II, or Macross Zero over this; maybe even Macross Seven. Perhaps it's okay if you've never seen Robotech, but if you have, STAY FAR, FAR AWAY!

I second that...I've got a few of those too.

Blegh...Real Bout High School. There was a manga/anime boxed set. I loved the manga, but the anime was terrible.

I kinda regret buying some of Love Hina too. It's not that I dislike the series, I just don't think I care to own it.

DONT DISS POKEMON! That movie pwned, back when I was 10-ish, but yea, it aint any good now that I look back at it. Still has one of the best movie lines I've seen in dubbed anime:

Brock (i think): "I didn't know vikings still existed..."
Ash: "They mostly live in Minnesota!"

NFL REFRENCE IN ANIME! PWNAGE!!!   And yes, I know that wasn't in the Japanese version.

I have, watched the first dvd, put it away for like 3 months. I did get a kick how Minmei sings like an Angel in this one yet laughs like a donkey ;p just can't get your way sometimes.

Well Banana, I would like to have the first two you list. I have an advantage, my son has more anime than I could ever watch and knows which ones I would like to see. Disadvantage is he lives about three hours drive away. I have a pile of his animes here that I have to get through.

In trying to find anime that he doesn't have I bought Garzey's Wing. This could be the worst anime ao all time. Only watch it if you want to laugh at one of the worst dubs ever made. Good thing I got it used for seven bucks, damn I could have gone to MacDonalds and had lunch for that, oh well. Another turkey on the shelf is Appleseed, the story is so-so and the character animation is poor. Only the background cgi and mechas save this one.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

For shame!! Excel Saga is one of the best parady anime out there.

My major disapointments are Cool Devicescollection, La Blue Girlcollection, and Akira(whitch I only bought so people would stop questioning me as to why I didn't have it  )
