Which anime would you consider mandatory viewing?

Akira. That is the one anime I would have to say should be manditory. I shouldn't really need to explain it, watch it and you'll see why.
Samurai X, Trust and Betrayal: One beautiful anime to say the least. It was one of the only animes to really touch me emotionally (which normally never happens)
Grave of the Fireflies (I'm pretty sure this was already mentioned so check the other posts)

Why do people complain about things? Why can't they just be happy that they were made for them?
I respect everyone's right to not like something, but complaining about it will acomplish nothing...

I fully agree on FLCL (of course),and I add Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi to the list of must sees.
It's not quite as deep as FLCL, but it does throw out gags faster, and is possibly even harder to get anything meaningful from. Also, there are so many jokes, in such a rapid succesion, that you could blink and miss five. However, as I said, Comedy is not all there is to Abeno. It has parodies of many genres, depth and meaning, and a few romance stories.
(For good manga try AI Love You, Saiyuki, The Demon Ororon, and of course Love Hina, although I'm hooked on Host Club right now)

By the way, 4 in principle it is agreeable with the recommendation Of seylor MUN - why no? Although entire series to look generally that is not compulsory, to become acquainted at least with one season is must, in addition, even if we are not pleased... in you will occasion be chuckled above the amateurs of this series - directly as my friends they chuckled themselves must by me
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Oto, what's with the broken speech patterns all of a sudden? You used to take such pride in being able to articulate your arguments. Now it's just like you got a partial lobotomy.
Anyway:
Grave of the Fireflies. (Simply put; It's a great, moving story)
Most of the Miyazaki works. (Kiki's delivery service, Porco Rosso, Whisper of the Heart etc..)
Akira (getting kind of old now but it's still one of the early greats that introduced so many people to anime)
Ghost in the Shell
Azumanga Daioh
Ah My Goddess (the movie at least)
Tenchi Muyo (the first arc)
I'd show any of those to someone that's never seen anime before as an introduction.

Build a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night. Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

I have and my original comment still stands....then again everyone has their own taste. I'm a huge Yamato fan...I know that not everyone likes that as well.
