While that IS true, it's not at the same time... it's complicated.
Dragonball Z is the most popular among the general public, because it was the one aired the most on Cartoon Network.
BUT, that doesn't mean it's the most popular among the Anime community in general. Older fans, like me, tend to prefer older or different shows (although we still enjoy DBZ), and many newer fans obssess over Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, or something like that. I'd say, in the Otaku community, Bleach holds the reigns right now.

True, for the moment. But I firmly believe that Naruto will overtake DBZ in popularity. If you use the number of AMVs using each anime as an indicator of popularity then look at the number of AMVs here that feature Naruto; 7610 entries as of this post, of which 5104 that are downloadable. Dragonball (including Z, GT, and movies) has 10491 entries total, 6551 downloadable, not including the few that are listed as "Dragon Ball".Joe88 wrote:Actually DBZ is the most popular anime series in north america.
I remind you that Dragonball has been around since 1986, in fact, according to ANN and Daizenshuu EX, this Sunday will be it's 20th anniversary of its first airing (February 26, 1986 in Japan). Admittedly, in the US, even though it was released unsuccessfully by Harmony Gold sometime in the '80s, it never really became popular until Funimation decided to air DBZ on Cartoon Network's Toonami in 1998, some three years after Funimation got the US rights in 1995.
Naruto, on the other hand, has been around only since late 2002. And it only started airing in the US in 2005.
Let's all come back in about 10 years and we shall see if I'm correct. Hell, Naruto will probably have more AMVs than Dragonball in about a year or two at this rate.

How many AMV's a show has doesnt mean how popular it is.Willen wrote:True, for the moment. But I firmly believe that Naruto will overtake DBZ in popularity. For all we know some crazy obcessed fan of any anime could have created about 1000 AMV's. In a couple of years. The manga is really popular of naruto. But the english dub .... lets just say its not that good. They somwhat wrecked it with the voices.

I just used it as an guide to it's popularity, relative to DBZ. Also, if it wasn't that popular, why would there be so many AMVs that use it?Joe88 wrote:How many AMV's a show has doesnt mean how popular it is.

I actually think it's pretty good compared to other dubs, translation issues aside. Also, I haven't seen too many Naruto fansub episodes so the japanese voices aren't burned into my head for comparison, unlike Rurouni Kenshin which I watched in its entirety on 3rd (or 4th) gen VHS.Joe88 wrote:The manga is really popular of naruto. It's WAY better done than One Piece...

In all honesty, knowing the American public, I'd have to say that either Ranma or Urusei Yatsura would end up being more popular than DBZ if they were ever to be aired.
HOWEVER, Ranma isn't exactly "basic cable friendly", and Urusei Yatsura... well, they only really had nudity in the first episode, when Ataru suction-cups Lum's bra off... but that's kind of an important scene.
The thing is, most anime that's really good either can't be shown on basic American cable without being editted, or the dub is just so bad that it's almost unbearable. Naruto, for a long time, seemed to be going the way of DBZ; I'm not sure, anymore, after reading chapter 296, but the show definitely is...
I want to see what people's reactions will be once Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles is aired. Considering Robotech's popularity, I wonder if that might replace DBZ as the most popular - for Americans in general, even people that hate Anime, Robtech is a classic; it's a piece of art from their childhood that's as good as they remember it.
