GX really just seems to be missing something. I think one big thing is that the cards in the show are based on the real cards, rather than vice-versa. Because of that, they don't have the wierd, cool abilities like in the first show. That, and the battles just aren't as exciting. When Judai (Jaden) was starring down the Red Eyes Darkness Dragon, it lasted only one turn, and didn't do much. Admitadly, that's probably how a real game would go, but come on; Yugi had to stare down Blue-Eyes Ultimate for how long before he could beat it?
I think the big thing is: Judai doesn't have those Deus Ex Machina moments that Yugi had. While realistically that's good, it just doesn't seem like Yugi-oh without them. Whatever happened to "I sacrifice three creatures for my Winged Dragon - God of Ra, and you can't do squat to kill it - One Turn Kill, bitch"? The battles just aren't as epic, really, and the energy just isn't there.
Although some of the things they did in Yugi-oh Duel Monsters was wierd (Yugi attacking his own magic card, which should've been destroyed; Jonouchi playing Time Wizard as a trap), Kazuki Takahashi wasn't trying to create a new game, just making wierd stuff up for the fake game. I think the big thing is: for it to get really good, they have to up the antes and energy to the point of Duel Monsters, and throw the real game out the door and make insanely unbalanced and godly cards for the characters to use, rather than make crappy decks out of boring real cards (come on, who doesn't wish Deck Destruction Virus of Death / Crush Card did what it does in the show - that would be awesome)
