Is there such a thing as "legit fansubs"?

But why can't you just download them off the 'net like everyone else? Not that I'll tell you how/where to do that, as it's against forum rules... but how many fansub groups actually make DVDs?

I was wonderng there was such a thing, too. He's telling me to get fansubs instead of bootlegs, when they're practically the same thing and I sure hell am not downloading FOR FREE, because that's just as bad as buying bootlegs if not worse.

Look, I am not for fansubs, like I said I have only DLed 3 episodes. Two where of Naruto and one was of Boogiepop Phantom. I have the Boogiepop Phatom series now and have seen the whole thing on DVD, and am currently buying the naruto Manga, which vol 6 was jut recently released. The three episodes I had are gone. I personally feel that booters a lot worse than fansubs based on this informaiton below
Anime Digital wrote:Although fansubs are unlicensed and a breech of copyright law, video companies in the western anime industry generally turn a blind eye. Fansubbers stop distributing the title as soon as the license has been bought by a company who will produce the title in their local language (this may not mean the fansubber's country). If they do not stop distributing titles when a license has been purchased by a video company the fansubber can be seen as video pirates and risk criminal prosecution.
I have been told also from other people and websites that fannsubbers want to popularize an anime before it comes out to the USA. Then when it is here they stop allowing it for download. Booters you have to pay for, and they, most likly, have already been licenced here. Booting is a lot more evil then fansubbing, but I am not saying I am for fansubbing either. Shit can people just face up and wait for an anime to be released here, and then buy the real thing. I mean come on, I am not rich, and I work at a pratically mini-wage job with low hours. If I can buy and enjoy anime so can you. Shit!
I SACRIFICE!

One more question: Downloading fansubs (or anything in general) is illegal, ne? Thought so. No way I'm doing anything illegal XD. HURRY UP AND LICENSE THE GOOD STUFF, USA!!!

Technically, yea. But there's a "moral standard" where we should stop downloading fansubs when the series gets licensed. I sometimes stop until the DVDs are released.

Gah! It should say "I stop downloading when the DVDs are released."

Hmmm, I think I made it more confusing.

I don't think there's been a precedent of that.
Noone, as far as I'm aware, has yet been taken to court over producing, let alone watching fansubs (under the fansubbers' code, anyways). If they would have, that probably would cause a huge shakeup in the fansubs community to say the least...

I don't really like bootlegs, but they aren't HORRIBLY bad. Like, I recently bought the Full Moon bootleg boxsets, and im happy with them although they are bootlegs. The show isn't liscenced in the first place, and chances are it never will (because of the singing.. unless the dont dub the singing..). The subtitles are never that great, so thats why I watch the fansubs first then buy the dvds, bootleg or not. The good thing about these full moon dvds is they do not have that annoying number in the corner, like some of the fansubs do. I've even used the boxsets to make music videos.

Of course, there are bootlegs that are very bad. My friend had ordered a bootleg boxset and the quality was like, ancient VHS quality. So if you are going to decide to buy bootlegs, be careful, cause you never know what your going to get.
