Cartoons contain artwork, how can they not be considered a form of art?

I'm not sure. But officially is a key word there.

The original post about it tells more.... it's somewhere in the middle of this thread.

Oh wow. I just realized what you were talking about. You're referring to Sammy's "History of Anime" announcing that Wings of Honneamais was the point when Anime "officially" became an art form, right?

Oh man.

I'm going to try and refrain from laughing outright so no one gets mad, but that's absolute nonsense.

What I THINK (don't know for certian) Sammy meant by that segment was that "Wings" was the first Anime film to recieve significant critical acclaim from film reviewers outside the genre. Whether or not that's true depends on how you define "significant." (After all, Naussica came out before "Wings," to much critical acclaim, as well as many, many others.)

At any rate, that is far from any kind of "official" induction to "Art" status. There's no such thing as "official" art...and even if there was, that would only apply on a film-by-film basis. You couldn't induct an entire genre or medium into being "officially art", just as every book ever written couldn't be made "official art" just because some academic liked one novel in particular.

I'm sorry, but your current argument is saying that "Dog Soldier"is art and "The Iron Giant"is not. At least one of these statments can't be true...

that video is very amusing... Sammy blatantly did a google search for "history of anime" for the written content.

This thread is never going to come to a conclusion, as is typical of most discussions of semantics. Some people prefer a precise definition, others prefer one that suits how they feel about the thing being described. Nobody can agree.

As for the nature of art.... that's one big can of worms you got there :)

I didn't mean that Cartoons didn't contain artwork, or that they were'nt art. I just meant that Cartoons haven't been called "Art" officially. Just like "ain't" isn't official a word.

If you want the ultimate proof that Anime and Cartoons are different, just watch them. They just aren't the same.

I can't help but wonder if this thread could've been resolved on the first page.
alternatefutures wrote:If the anime you were watching was meant to be humorous, it is a cartoon. Anime and cartoon are not exclusive terms, there is a lot of overlap between the two.
I do believe that some anime shows are cartoons, but not all of them. Much like some animated shows in the US are cartoons, but not all of them (I don't consider Batman: The Animated Series or Gargoyles to be cartoons).
