Actually, there was only one, but two duels did take place in which she was the prize. The first duel was fought simply because Utena was pissed at Saionji for hitting Anthy, the second was actually a direct challenge for the rosebride.

Joke answer. That’s because after the last angel gave shinji a blowjob in the bath he realized that a woman could never satisfy him ever again.

OK now for my real answer. I think its because he felt that he was not worthy of any form of love after killing the last angel whom he thought was a better being then him self.
