And I would also like to add, that there have always been anime wannabe's. Since DBZ first came out there were people that thought that because they knew it they knew all there was to anime, but people who know what they are talking aobut are the ones that keep ahead of funimation and the dubbers and get this stuff as the fansubs are released. Trigun was picked up and so was CB, the wannabe's will watch this stuff for the first time on TV while the true otaku will have already seen it and moved on to soemthing else. Not to bash the series, Trigun and CB are great. I'm just saying that there will always be a division of aniem fans, those who take it for the shallow action as it comes to TV, and those who take it for EVERYTHING it has to offer.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

There is an Anime Channel "The Anime Network", but it is currently only broadcast in philadelphia.
I guess its going to stay like that until demand grows or soemthing, i dont know how that works.
Hey, but think of it this way, MTV started in just one channel, and popular demand spread it across the world.
Let's all start singing.

I want my...
I want my...
I want my Anime Network

I meant city, not channel. MTV started in just one city.

Hahaha... let us hope so...

Anyhow... Your thoughts on Azumanga Daioh intrigue me... I would like to subscribe to your newsletter. Is there, by any chance, a way in which to aquire this, other than D/L it, 'cause damn I hate it when it takes a month to D/L a series. If not, that's cool... I suppose I can stand the wait.

There are the fansubs you can download, as well as the bootleg DVDs and homemade VCDs you can get off of Ebay. I would suggest the VCDs (since the subs are more accurate) if you go the Ebay, but really, just download the fansubs.

There are also official Japanese releases, but those were limited printing, and I'm not sure if they have English subs.

I'm not sure if any US distributors have picked up Azumanga. Hopefully someone will.
I'm out...

Oh No Anime becoming popular, BOO HOO!

Post by derek_t » Sat Mar 01, 2003 7:50 pm

Oh no, now just anyone can watch anime, what are we going to do.

Oh thats right nothing. I like the way people who don't like anime becoming popular talk about how they are watching a show "the wrong way". Look that has been happening for years. How many people go to the Godfather because "that scene in the resturant in so cool!". Oh no, people you were watching with weren't as enlightened as you were, how condesending.

I hate this, I can't stand people who decided that only a select group should be allowed to do something (whether it be anime, watching dirty films, etc). I 100% certain that when the creator of these shows were making the shows they didn't say "I just hope beyond hope that only 100 people watch, please don't let my show become popular"

For those about to say "look at how shows like DrangonBall Z destoried themselfs when it got popular here" yes its bad, but they only have themselfs to blame. How many other shows have decide even thought they are popular to stop. Lets see there Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Eva, etc, etc, etc.

Finally, stop whinning about how you were "special" when you were one of the few to watch anime but now that more people know about you not "special" anymore. If I may suggest if you want to feel special do something that makes you special, don't watch a show to make you feel that way.

...the problem I see a lot is that many good amv makers think they suck, and many bad amv makers think they're good.
I've seen it happen, man! I've SEEN IT!..

I am not complaining about animes becoming popular, I'm complaining about the people who think that because they watch it they are GODS GIFT TO MANKIND! I can't spit without hiting someone who says

*spoilers even though you already know it*

get this, at the end of CB spike DIES, and they made a CB movie in Japan.

*end spoilers*

And the same went for DBZ fans that were making a big deal about how they downloded leaked eps ahead of time. And then there are the other people that go on lies, roumers, and distort the fact. For instance

*more*

Spike doesn't die, I heard from a friend of a friend that went to japan that in the movie he lives.

*end*

Or the people that though eva sucked because they didn't understand the ending (the the people who are on the other end of the spectrum who think they are the authority of Eva because their friend got the kabalah.)

I mean, every time something gets popular it runs the risk of gettign flooded with morons and that is bound to happen to anime, but like I said before, the true otaku don't have to worry about the morons since the otaku are the ones keeping one step ahead of them in the anime trend.

You are missing the point.
The argument is very simple. It's good that anime is popular worlwide, and it still increases its popularity. I hope it continues like that forever, but the problem is that they have to strip some of their integrity to do so. Sacrifices must be made. When Eva was edited on cartoon network beyond recognition, it pissed me off so much. But at least it introduced it to alot of people who will hopefully seek out the anime.
I agree that we have the regular viewers to blame for that. But as I said before, if anime becomes more popular, the viewers have to mature, But if thats not the case, you're right. There's nothing we can do. And thats whats so sad.

Thats the thing, I don't care if eva is butchered on CN because I saw the show long before then, same with all CN anime.
