wow! i just wanted to say that i'm really enjoying reading everybody's thoughts on the series and movie. you guys all make interesting points.
for me, i think a good comparison for the escaflowne series and movie would be what happened with CLAMP's X when it was animated. but of course, the X movie came before the series

I liked the Escaflowne series very much. I found the storyline intriguing. One of the things I liked best about the series was how it managed to stay on track of the plot... none of the episodes were about sub-plots that never ended up being part of the main storyline. All of the episodes tied together into an involved plot that came together in the end.
As for the characters, I liked Van/Vaughn. I was happy that Hitomi ended up liking him instead of Allen, because I really didn't like Allen very much. Allen never seemed very sincere when he was talking to Hitomi. It was like he was just being chivalrous because it was his job as a knight. Vaughn was more honest when he spoke to people and had more faults so that he wasn't seemingly-perfect like Allen was. Hitomi herself was interesting. She wasn't completly typical (I have yet to see another female anime character with short hair) and her concerns and emotions were convincing. But I thought Merle and Folken were the best characters.
I didn't like the movie. The animation was good, yes, but I thought it lacked real emotion. Hitomi seemed so phased-out all the time so that she never looked like she was feeling anything. Vaughn looked cooler and had a more mysterious feel, but he never said anything. He was a character that never had anything of importance to say, he just was there to look cool and not much else. But I did like how they drew his wings.
I kind of liked how the series mixed so many different genres. It kept it from being too predictable. And stuff actually happened. It was entertaining and not dull, so it kept me wanting to see what happened next. It remains my second-favourite series (just after Trigun ).

The pointy noses in the TV series didn't bother me that much, although other slight inconsistencies in the artwork did. But I loved the shafts of light. I don't know any other anime that has them.
I HATED the movie when I first saw it. Recently I watched it again, and this time around I thought it was all right. But I still prefer the TV series because the characters there were a lot more fleshed out.
Of course Hitomi and Van's relationship is underdeveloped. That's why I write fanficion

I'm going crazy. Meryl Strife from Trigun has short hair, and so does Rei Ayanami from Eva. (And she's even in my avatar too! Good grief...)I wrote:She wasn't completly typical (I have yet to see another female anime character with short hair)
The noses... gave character I guess. They bothered me more when I made an AMV with the Escaflowne footage than when I actually watched the series, but I did get used to them. But the noses certainly set a style for Escaflowne's animation. Just one look at the nose and you know whether it's Escaflowne or not.

Not really on-topic, but I SO wish I could release my newest video because of this thread (i.e. interest in Escaflowne). I have an Escaflowne video finished, but am waiting to "premiere" at ACen'03 in May since that's my "home" con and all ym friends are there. Grrr..I guess keep a look-out in mid-may. It's my first video that I think is ok (this is a big deal for me )

You didn't see the whole movie so it doesn't count. Experience the whole torture and then you will be qualified to spill the regurgitation.Kracus wrote:I fell asleep during the movie. If that counts.
neway, esca mov needs more action, a lot more. the beginning was depressing. why didn't she just go kill herself already.
