The only thing that I am really wary about is the possiblity for people who are "DBZ whores". It's good that there is more good stuff getting out there thanks to Adult Swim and the somewhat efforts way back when of Fox and WB, but as it stands, it's only THAT kind of thing that is being mainstreamed. Anime as we know it is NOWHERE near being really mainstreamed. X mainstream? Don't make me laugh. Right now, all people know about anime is what they see before 8:00 pm. That means, Dragon Ball, Gundam, Zoids, Pokemon, etc. Not to mention the new darling of the animation industry, "Anime-style" western animation.

But I've gotten off-topic. My point? Anime is being mainstreamed....but to a VERY limited degree. About the degree that was mentioned in the essay as being mainstream 5 years ago. The only thing that has changed is that there is more anime being shown. The perceptions people have of anime haven't changed at all. I heard tell once of a couple who brought their child to see the Cowboy Bebop movie, "Knocking on Heaven's Door", because "it was animated! therefore it's a cartoon!' therefore, it's for kids!'. People know real anime exists. They don't know that real anime is a hell of a lot darker than what they see normally. Until they realize that, and like what they see, Anime will never be really mainstream, Oscars or not.

not trying to be anal, but you skipped over Paramount/UPN showing DB, DBZ, Sailor Moon, Ronin Warriors and Sci fi channel showing anime movies like Akira, 3x3 eyes, the one with the mechincal bed taking the old man on a journey (rather funny), etc. They appeared around 1994, not to sure about the exact date but before CN's toonami.

I detest DBZ whores. I don't mean those who are well-versed in anime and still love DBZ, I'm referring to those idiots who have only seen DBZ and insist that it's the only good anime. I can't stand them. And yet they have the most control over the mainstream.

I remember the good old days of sci-fi satudray morning anime. I miss those times. . . .
Reality is for people who lack imagination.
