I used dashes(-) to indicate degrees of separation for me personally. Ranma 1/2 is my favorite, followed quickly thereafter by Inuyasha, then after that its a mad scramble to pick my 3rd favorite. I decided to bump up Eva a few spots because it is such an excellent anime even without understanding it, and even better when completely understood.
This list only includes (good) anime I've seen. I've heard great things about Tenchi Muyo, Naruto, Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure orange road, Fruits basket, Rahzephon, Azumanga Daioh and many others I can't remember cuz I didnt go to bed last night! (so please forgive spelling errors) Indeed I can't wait to see these animes and report on them. I'm finishing up my fourth year of College, and every semester I swear I've seen the best anime there is to offer and that anime can only go down from here. And each semester I get surprised by at least one new great show. I strongly recommend buying anime, at least the cheap (and likely bootleg) stuff since its nice to look at or show off, but if you want to test the waters before purchasing a series, try downloading an episode or two with bittorrent. Theres a ton of great sites for this program, I'll give you just one link (I can hear people bitching at me right now):
http://crackrock.net/~box/tracker/index.php
you'll need to find bittorrent and download it elsewhere, unless its there and I didnt see it. I've never used it but I've heard nothing but praise for it. My friends tell me it beats the be-jesus out of kazaa for anime. (Sorry Jesus)
Then if you want to buy anime cheap, theres a ton of good sites to look over. I'll give you two that I have:
http://www.cookiejarvideo.com/
http://edvdstore.com/
And of course these are just my opinions, and even though I've obviously put a lot of thought into it, its still just my preferences. You'll notice I left out FLCL and Excel Saga, because I disliked those animes. However, they are generally very well liked and theres a good chance you will like them too.
I hope this is more helpful. And to anyone else in here, please dont bitch at me, I'm just trying to help the poor mate out. - _^
(on a side note; click on the crackrock link, you might see an add banner there for some immortality device. Is that the sickest most retarded scam you've ever heard in your life? What, let me guess, you gotta stick it up your ass? When that guy dies I want to visit his tombstone, I'm sure it will contain some hilarious sarcastic comment)
