Well, ok, if you had the exact same taste as me I would recommend (in order):
________________________Top Tier__________________
Ranma 1/2
-Inu Yasha
---Neon Genesis Evangelion
---Full Metal Panic
---Love Hina
---Escaflowne
---Golden Boy
---Outlaw Star
----Berserk
-----Cowboy Bebop
_______________________Second Tier________________
--------Trigun
--------Kenshin
---------GTO
----------Kanon
------------Read or Die
--------------Hellsing
_______________________Third Tier__________________
-----------------Chobits
------------------X - tv (official level of mediocrity)
--------------------Noir (.hack//SIGN, etc, etc, et al)

I used dashes(-) to indicate degrees of separation for me personally. Ranma 1/2 is my favorite, followed quickly thereafter by Inuyasha, then after that its a mad scramble to pick my 3rd favorite. I decided to bump up Eva a few spots because it is such an excellent anime even without understanding it, and even better when completely understood.

This list only includes (good) anime I've seen. I've heard great things about Tenchi Muyo, Naruto, Maison Ikkoku, Kimagure orange road, Fruits basket, Rahzephon, Azumanga Daioh and many others I can't remember cuz I didnt go to bed last night! (so please forgive spelling errors) Indeed I can't wait to see these animes and report on them. I'm finishing up my fourth year of College, and every semester I swear I've seen the best anime there is to offer and that anime can only go down from here. And each semester I get surprised by at least one new great show. I strongly recommend buying anime, at least the cheap (and likely bootleg) stuff since its nice to look at or show off, but if you want to test the waters before purchasing a series, try downloading an episode or two with bittorrent. Theres a ton of great sites for this program, I'll give you just one link (I can hear people bitching at me right now):

http://crackrock.net/~box/tracker/index.php

you'll need to find bittorrent and download it elsewhere, unless its there and I didnt see it. I've never used it but I've heard nothing but praise for it. My friends tell me it beats the be-jesus out of kazaa for anime. (Sorry Jesus)

Then if you want to buy anime cheap, theres a ton of good sites to look over. I'll give you two that I have:

http://www.cookiejarvideo.com/

http://edvdstore.com/

And of course these are just my opinions, and even though I've obviously put a lot of thought into it, its still just my preferences. You'll notice I left out FLCL and Excel Saga, because I disliked those animes. However, they are generally very well liked and theres a good chance you will like them too.

I hope this is more helpful. And to anyone else in here, please dont bitch at me, I'm just trying to help the poor mate out. - _^

(on a side note; click on the crackrock link, you might see an add banner there for some immortality device. Is that the sickest most retarded scam you've ever heard in your life? What, let me guess, you gotta stick it up your ass? When that guy dies I want to visit his tombstone, I'm sure it will contain some hilarious sarcastic comment)

My favorite anime is and will probably always be Cowboy Bebop. Y'know, just a suggestion. Good stuff.

Among my extended group of high school/college alma mater friends over several states, I am the only one to dislike this anime, which is why I still recommended it.

I'll grant that I liked Excel Saga more than FLCL. Episode 4 (Dating Sim) in particular was EXTREMELY funny. The running gags were like rolling rocks gaining moss, they werent really funny at first (well to be blunt, not funny at all) but later on they started to get to me a little, making me crack a smile and laugh lightly. i.e.: Pedro's tragic character was annoying as hell at first, but it kind of got stuck in my head and in a totally out of touch with reality kind of way, I eventually began to find him slightly funny.

I liked il pallazzo (forgive spelling) and Hiatt, and space butler was just rediculous (0 _ ^)
Ah, good ol' space butler. Not funny, but an attention grabber? Hell yes.

Nabashin was as colorful and he was afro blaxploitation cliche.
The show was definitely original and outrageous, no doubt. (as was FLCL)

I saw it dubbed, and Excel (the character) never ceased to be grating on the nerves, and way too many of the jokes (most anime related) were over my head, even to this day. The sub was worse, only because it was even harder to follow.

I really believe that if they made another Excel Saga in 10 years making fun of the animes I'm more familiar with (Inuyasha, Cowboy Bebop, Love Hina, etc etc) I would love the series. I havent really ever found randomness funny, and I'm too new with anime to catch all the old school anime references, so it just didnt work for me, or at least, it didnt work often.

Frankly, I'd really like to see an anime that ruthlessly pokes fun at Inu Yasha or Ranma 1/2. The more I love a show, the more fun it is to see it get spoofed. The South Park spoof in FLCL almost made that show worth seeing just because of that.

I normally love anime comedies (note my placement of Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, Love Hina, and Full metal Panic). I also love satire (the daily show and south park are easily my favorite American shows). I think I just got into the game too late for this one, either that or I'm just too sane to find it funny ;).

If you want more info on X look up X/1999. Make sure it's the TV series you're looking at and not the movie, though...yes, there is a movie, and I heard it was absolutely horrible. I haven't seen it. The series is great...though I've only seen up to volume 4. :( SUBARU SUMERAGI ROCKS!!!!!! :D
