I'm not sure if this has been addressed here, or not... just kinda skimming...
But there is absolutely no reference, by name, to the "enemy" in the movie what-so-ever, and this is absolutely on purpose. This is brought up in further detail in the extras on the second disc of the new release... but...
Yeah, there's no reference to the enemy in the movie as being "American." According to those interviewed for the extras, Japan has been invaded (and has invaded) so many times, that the actual name of the enemy is just trivial. Unless you know a good deal about history (and specifically the types of planes), you might not even know who the enemy is supposed to be according to this time. Since the focus is on such deep personal human emotions, rather than the grand scheme of world events, it would be illogical to get into such detail about the enemy.
And for the record, it's "fireflies"... not sure if that was brought up, either, but it's buggin' me :P Also, I encourage anyone and everyone to take high-level Japanese history and literature courses. They rock.

yes, it actually did bug me at first, but meh... i just figured it's nice to know the truth when others don't... i'm selfish like that sometimes, that way i don't get too soft..VegettoEX wrote:And for the record, it's "fireflies"... not sure if that was brought up, either, but it's buggin' me Also, I encourage anyone and everyone to take high-level Japanese history and literature courses. i wouldn't have expected japanese literature to be anything outstanding, but then again, i've never looked into it, if i get a chance, i'll definately try to read some... though i wish i knew how to read kanji... if that's what they're using
well ur right about the narrow-minded part... but i don't think people are being that way in this topic anyways. admiting that someone did something wrong is very different from calling that person an idiot and labeling them for life. We're not being Anti-American, i'm pretty sure everyone would be Pro-American if they lived in this country and experienced the luxuaries "Americans" experience, freedom tends to be a very likable thing... but it's just as narrow minded to believe that the US is pure... it's done evil things in the past too, so we're not saying US=Bad, just some of the things that it's done have been bad... again, like other countriesbum wrote:hmmm, i sence a sence of anti-americanism here. enough to say that anyone who thinks that GOTF is anti-american even in the slightest is a fucking narrowminded idiot
Specificational Rant wrote:btw, i said "Americans" instead of just Americans because i think it's one of the dumbest things in the world that it's so friggin accepted in our society that we consider US citizens to be called Americans... in reality, a friggin Argentinian is an American... after all, America is made up of 2 continents, North AND South America, so Canadians are Americans too! (OMG-BLASPHEMY)
and it's all because we (US residents) have a country with a fucked up name, if you live in Spain, you're a Spaniard or are Spanish... but if you live in the United States of America, you're an American... doesn't fit, i think they should change the common name of US citizens to USians... it doesn't sound the prettiest, but suck it up, YOU CAN'T HAVE EVERYTHING ALL PRETTY AND SHINEY!
Canada has Canadians
Mexico has Mexicans
USA has USians

"Hello my name is Bob, and I am a man who cries. It all started with GotF, but soon escalated. Whatever show I watched I just begin to cry at the end, I mean for Sesamy Street. Why can't Bert and Ernie just come out? Its heart wrenching that they have to hide behind this facade of just being friends. So what if it is a children's show. They deserve to be happy "
Wow that was just strange, I think I need some sleep.
Can't we just say GotF is anti everything. Anti-American (even though I doubt it), anti-Japanese (detachment of need of others just in order to survive) and anti-war (which is most likely).
