EVANGELION:
The year is 2015 A.D. the world is recuperating from the damage left by the Second Impact, a planet-wide catastrophe that killed half the Earth's population. Mysterious alien beings known only as the Angels are attacking. Mankind's only hope of surviving are the humanoid fighting machines called the EVAs. But the they can only be piloted by children who were born exactly nine months after the Second Impact. But the true story behind is the story about the character Shingi and his mental transformation since he recently know that he was one of the chosen children that have the task of saving the earth. Shingi has to decide between being a normal kid or show his father that he has what it takes to be an Eva pilot. At first look the story seems to be only about a war between the Evas and the angels but the story is more complicated than that. First we have the story of Shingi and his mind transformation for acceptance. Then we have the individual stories of each character like: Rei, Asuka etc. Which are involve in the second impact. Then we have the story of the origins of the Evas. Then the story about NERV and the people that funded NERV and work there. An last but not least the story and the reasons some persons have to initiate a third impact. It all connects once you see the series very closely and keeping an open mind.

In my opinion, everything indicating that Shinji "chooses" to accept or reject Instrumentality is so vague and without context that trying to draw such conclusions from them is really a stretch.
Besides, all the real drama happens in the real world, so that's all I care about.
