Only a noob to this site, so try to assume less. And perhaps its because there is always some pompous ass who likes to toss out insults.

What part of they are both the standard male loser anime model did you not get?

loose slightly slumped posture, becomes tense easily, plain dress clothes, simple wide and open eyes, round-arch eyebrows, frequent sad or far away expressions, detachment, social but at least a little confused, follows the group a bit when concerned with women (particularly strong women), etc.

My large stack of art books disagree with you.

Break it down to basics. Distinguish character design from personality and story. Establish basic generic character elements. Then the character assumes a role and pulls out more features. Think of it as prototypes and then a story adaptation.


As far as personality:

Kei: Yeah he's so on top of the world that he has repressed memories and passes out. Emotionally confused and unsure of how to handle situations (especially with the ladies).

Shinji: He buckles under pressure. It just comes out darker. Of course the premise for the story is darker. Emotionally confused and unsure of how to handle situations (especially with the ladies). On a side note about the bitch thing reference ZZ Tops song Got Me Under Pressure and you'll get it. (I think the song was originally on the album Eliminator.)

Just because people handle things differently on the outside doesn't mean that they are not similar. Some of the most messed up people are very social, outgoing, laugh all the time, and are so frickin' happy it could make you vomit.

Like I eluded to before sometimes it is easy to mush in the story with the characters. Never underestimate the influence of a situation. Plenty of people would be screwed up in Shinji's position and Kei's as well. Both are rather confused as to how to handle situations with several women and conflicting feelings amongst a group.

Shinji has the fate of the world on his mind. If he buckles under the pressure of the various circumstances he is in socially, at least it means he cares. Me, I would say screw it, shit happens and roll the dice. But I cannot fault Shinji for his indecision.

Check out the Zimbardo Stanford Prison experiment. (Even Zimbardo got sucked into the simulation. It was rather clever.)

Also see the Milgram Psychological experiment. On a lesser note the research done by Darley & Latane applies to the situations when comparing the two.

You know the next time you disagree with somebody perhaps you should take the advice I gave at first. ASK. By philosophical definition a discussion is mutual gain while an argument is a contest to win. Take care when choosing which to begin.

Just from the way you wright I can tell that you likely view things in terms of black and white. You expect me to think of you as a person of vision? By all means prove me wrong about you. It would be a point on the positive side for humanity.

Kei actually has some real problems based in the real world, a health issue that he shared with his friend Ichigo (i think thats her name; the short 21 year old) and he is still doing really well as a result. He actually has friends, relationship prospects,. he does well at school. He's married (granted that it was under some pretty odd circumstances).

Shinji has nothing and he blames everyone else in the world for it except the one person who is at fault - himself. He's a spineless wimp. He doesnt have "the weight of the world" on his shoulders, he's just choosing to be a pissy little angst-ridden depressive.

Kei actually does stuff about his problems. And as a result he winds up fixing most of them. Ok, so he gets into a few situations where he freezes up and starts getting a tad angsty, but everyone does, and he gets over it.

Shinji hits a wall and just gives the fuck up without lookin for the door thats right in fucking front of him. Know how he deals with his problems? He causes the collective dissociation of the ENTIRE HUMAN RACE. Just because he is having a bad day.

Thats the fundamental difference between them. Kei can deal, he just finds it a little hard at times. Shinji chooses not to deal and just to keep running the fuck away from everyone and everything that has ever been there to help him. You see it by the end of the series - people are just getting tired of his fucking incessant whining.

Why the hell would I need to imagine anime characters similar?

Want a further explanation from me? All you have to do is ask. Chi and Tsunami are similar in hair style, but that's about it. One of the similarities that I've found other people making in this thread when comparing two different characters is the facial features the characters have. While Tsunami has the look of a young benevolent mother, Chi (while she does have a similar look from time to time) usually has a puzzled look. Also, the two totally differ in personality. Tsunami is sincere, knowledgeable and has shown a bit of anger once. Chi on the other hand can be one of the following: happy, depressed or extremely clueless. I'll admit, there are a few similarities between the two, but not enough for me, personally, to be convinced.

This is going beyond the basic anime arch-types, but the situations are so different. Kei blows it and someone gets sad. Shinji blows it and good bye Earth (plus a beating from Asuka).

Its sort of the same reason your favorite athlete can make a pass thousands of times in practice and then mess up something simple when it counts. Its just those high pressure Guns N' Roses type environments.
