...actually i don't think it's ever released as anime in the united states...
Actually it has recently been released in the US.
Check It Out

A few mangas that I think are great and I don't think have been mentioned....

Gantz - If you like blood, sex, and death you will love Gantz. But I don't just love it for those reasons alone. At first I thought this was going to be just gore and violence, but there was actually a lot of drama in this series. Some parts almost brought me tears. While other parts are filled with hardcore action and great fight scenes.

Bleach - I just really like this manga. It has a great story and great characters. Action/Comedy/Drama all roled into a great manga.

Hellsing - Don't let the anime ruin this great series for you. The manga will take you to a side of Hellsing you never got a chance to see in the anime. The anime is an ant compared to the manga. For those who have read some of the manga and have watched the anime, you know what I am talking about.

Dragonball - Okay, before all you "DBZ is horrible" people come yelling, let me tell you, Dragonball is an amazing manga in my opinion. It blows the roof off of the anime by far. In the first volume alone, you get more comedy then you would have imagined. There are many things in this manga that you will not find in the show, and those missing parts are some of the best. I suggest this to any manga reader that likes action and comedy. So before you go hating all things DBZ related, read this manga, and you might see that it isn't all "crap."

I have some others, and may post them later, but for now those are some mangas that I think are good.

The best one to me is...

[nope not Onegai Teacher sadly enough, damn, Gohda or Uon Taraku should have drawn it ;_;]

I'd have to have a tie between...

Battle Vixens [Ikki Tousen is its real name, stupid licensors are too idiotic with their titles]

and

Bastard!!

The artists who did both these titles know the true meaning of sex0rs and gore and how to satisfy one's ID... oh yeah.. :D

yep...
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

Detective Connan...or Conan...

now come to think of it that's one of the most classic animanga ever created, (well only in my opinion...) it was created way back, i think in 1998 or 99...i only got to see it cuz i was in China back then and the animes always release earlier there for obvious reasons. I don't see it being mentioned by a lotta people so it was sorta nagging to bring it up. but i've only seen the anime though i think it was released in the U.S. and there was only one volume of the manga. but it's full of suspense and a lotta logic plus tons of comedy. So this is another one i thought was really good.

As far as the manga that's already been mentioned; Slam Dunk, Akira, Naruto, Kenshin, Gunsmith Cats and Evangelion.

Now for my favorites that haven't been mentioned.

Battle Angel Alita- A very dark and gritty manga set in the future. Above the citizens of the rung down junkyard is the city of Tiphares, a world of technological advancement and prosperity. The people of Tiphares rule over the junkyard. One day, Dr. Ido finds the body of a female android and revives her. The girl, who Ido names Alita, knows nothing about her past at all, but somehow knows everything about the deadly art of Panzer Kunst. Through out the entire series, Alita tries lives her life as one horrible experience after another confronts her. Packed with lots of action and very violent, the flow of the story gets rushed once it hits volume 5, but it's still good.

X-Day- Short series, two volumes long. Looks at the situation of four people who are sick with the world around them and decide to blow up their school. Each person has their own problems as they try to help each other to make the best of everything.

Vagabond- Recently been getting this one from the library, written by the same guy who did Slam Dunk. A survivor of the battle of Sekigahara vows to become the greatest swordsman alive. Extremely bloody and very mature. Can't say much about it since I've only read Vol. 1 so far.

And as far as G.T.O., Getbackers and Ranma 1/2 are concerned, do I really need to explain why they're so great?
Probably too busy to be here right now.

All good calls, but there is one manga that I think is one of the greatest manga of all. In fact, there are a couple.

I may be beaten a dead horse since anyone whose read my posts by now should know...

... the best manga is from the GOD of manga! Osamu Tezuka!

Some titles:

1. New Treasure Island (The FIRST manga)
2. Metropolis
3. Astro Boy
4. Black Jack

THERE!
