R.A. Heinlein had some comments about 'the movie made from the book.' First, he made all his character descriptions sparse - if an author writes, 'tall, almost handsome but a bit too rugged-looking,' we will -ALL- have different ideas of what that character -OUGHT- to look like. Same with 'beautiful,' 'striking,' 'plain,' and 'scumbag.' So they make the movie, and a whole swath of folks go, 'Hey - he/she doesn't look like that at all!'pyro_256 wrote:making movies of books ends up ruining it. they can't make a movie long enough to get all important parts from a series like the wheel of time. that'd need a LONG movie for just one book to be redone. and it would shatter people's images of characters.
For anime, the voice actors will throw in ANOTHER variable: 'So-and-so shouldn't have had that Bay-area accent,' (or whatever.)
Second, it's likely that 'the good parts' will mean different parts among the whole bunch of readers, and SOMEthing will invariably get cut - like Tom Bombadil - and there goes another chunk of people who'll insist 'the book was better.'
Maybe a better question would be to think of the existing pro studios in Japan - Gainax, Sunrise, Madhouse, Gonzo, etc, and wonder what good SF stories these groups might be GOOD at animating.
'Enders Game' might be a good choice for anime, because it centers around a young boy and some serious mind-games being played on him. I can't recall much anime in which, say, all the characters are over 25 earth-years old. Maybe because most anime characters can be starship captains by age 18. But a story with at least one teen-age or younger character 'fits' anime much better than a Robert Ludlum or Clive Cussler spy-thriller. (Hey, wouldn't Gene Starwind do for Dirk Pitt?)

the Foundation books.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

If you've ever done any lingual studies, you would know that every region possesses a sub-accent that diverges slightly from the main accent that it branches from.the Black Monarch wrote:There is no such thing as a Bay Area accent, although there is the famous Valley Girl accent. Is that what you're thinking of?

Early Ender and the parallels would be better animes than the ones where ender is grown up. The Anite Blake: Vampire Hunter Series would be badass. Perdido Street Station by China Mievelle would be an amazing anime series. I suggest this book to anyone who reads, I think the world Mievelle created rivals that of Tolkien, and is more original. Also, for anyone who liked the ender books, War Child by Karin Lowachee was awesome and would make a great anime.
So those would be:
Ender's Game/Shadow of the Hegemon/Ender's Shadow/Shadow Puppets(Card let me down on the last one) - Orson Scott Card
Perdido Street Station and maybe The Scar - China Mieville
Anite Blake: Vampire Hunter (only if based on one book)- Laurel K Hamilton
War Child - Karin Lowachee
Servant of the Bones - Anne Rice
American Gods or Neverwhere - Neil Gaiman
there are some others I will think of as I try to sleep.
