I think that the censorship in the US is to really dumb, personally i dont see what the issue is with what they show on Anime and neither do my friends and famally that dont watch anime, the fact that this companys dont understand is that in a way the japanese are teaching the kids through anime that the world is not all made of pretty flowers and light colors, the world can have very diferent aspects that need to be seen, im not saiying that kids should believe that you can have a special power or a magical rodent (pikachu or whatever) but that what the character feels and sees and lives in the emotions axpect can happend to you, I live right next to the border between US and Mexico and beleive me, i have seen Anime un-cut and un-edited in Mexico and with great translations true to its original even the music and theme song just sung in spanish and it cool, but when a company from the US shows the same Anime in the US man do they screw it up bad i really loose interest in it even if i allready saw it and liked it........ uhmmm...... hm.... what was my point again....

oh yeah... DONT BUTCHER ANIME

Oh Sweet Christmas, that link is going to show up in this thread more times than Ozzy at a Bat Eating contest!

These are all good points that anime can teach things to kids through their characters better than most US kids shows can. (I say most because I saw a VERY interesting and unique take at teaching the wrongs of Racism through Teen Titans. It's the episode called "Troq") When edited, these teachings are often lost or dumbed down to levels that are just plain insulting.

I tried watching a dubbed episode of Yu-Gi-Oh, and as soon as someone started SINGING DURING A CARD BATTLE IN THE US DUB, I shook my head in disbelief and thought "Oh Dear God, what have they done?" Singing in Pokemon... okay I can see that! Hell, if they didn't sing, we wouldn't have animutations like "Hyakugojyuuichi"! But YU-GI-OH!!!?

Not just life lessons are dumbed down when they censor anime to bits and pieces... so are reflections of Japanese culture. When Pokemon tried to call a rice ball a "donut", I simply wanted to slap myself stupid in disbelief! Later, they actually showed Brock MAKING a Rice Ball, but THIS time they actually CALLED it that! I recall a time when they tried to make anything Japanese American! Digimon seemed like it would go the direction of making everyone come from America! Sailor Moon had things renamed ad-nauseaum to try and cover up any Japanese references. They even REVERSED A SHOT OF A BUS TRAVELLING ON THE STREET SO THAT IT WOULD BE IN THE RIGHT LANE AND NOT THE LEFT!

That's just being asanine!

Things are getting better though! Some shows that get through ADMIT that there are Japanese roots in their story, and even widen cultural horizons, even if just a little bit. If they ever admit that Yoh is Japanese, then maybe there's hope.

And on the topic of Fox licenses... I remember when they tried showing Vision of Escaflowne on Fox Kids! They NEVER FINISHED AIRING all the episodes and even cut out the first one! Fox was too chicken shit scared to finish what they started, and MAN did they stink at it! I believe you about having the Slayers license too! I also remember they USED to have Detective Conan. Imaging THAT on FoxKids!

All in all, if it weren't for Adult Swim... anime on U.S. television would be HOSED!

Well there is a lot to be said for censorship. It sucks sums it up, but here is a list of why.

Side note: The first pokemon games were amazing for old gameboy games. The show and subsequent games are mostly marketing ploys to milk people of their money, particularly children with collector habits.
Oh well it was an idea based around cock fighting animals anyway.

1. Censorship is a crime against artistic vision.

2. It destroys open minds making people stupid. (This includes cultural modifications like names, foods, and music.)

3. It ruins the story and defeats the point.

4. If people don't want the real thing they should watch something else. Unlike the censorship police we don't force our beliefs on people.

5. Censorship advocates can live like the Amish if they wish, but they have no right to force it upon others.

6. Free speech anyone???

7. It promotes people to bootleg the real deal. (Irony)

I remember there was an 80s dub of Dragonball. Goku was Zero, Bulma was Lenna, and the story was so watered down from the original with little fights with lots of dirty jokes that it made no sense. (Horrid voices as well.)

I like Bandai. They release every thing from kids shows to Hack Sign to progressively darker shows. (Great voice actors and the original music as well.)

I think the message is getting through. I think a completely uncut DBZ is going to be made or something. First vol is out I think.

You know I didn't even think to bring up the entertainment value for kids.

I don't think any kid actually thought Mickey mouse was funny. Even as a kid it was kinda like, '....this is lame...'

Of course I remember the day when R rated movies made children's toys. Now that kicked ass.

The great lasting affect of that....I have no fear of the dark or scary movies.
Sheltering people seems to be what makes people screwy later.

Its not just the U.S. either. In Britain the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were changed to Hero Turtles. Apparently Ninja is an offensive and violent word.
