I would have to agree on Bebop. It is my favorite anime series, currently. So far it's been the only one to really grab me from the first disc and keep me wanting more. I'm watching another one right now called Knight Hunters Eternity, but I think it's the second season. It's a quality series so far, with solid characters, intriguing back stories, and a fun concept.

Noir is another top notch series, in my opinion, though I never finished it. Samurai Deeper Kyo would also be a good one to watch.

I thought it sucked at first.. the first few eps made me yawn.. and I was wondering what all the hype was about... then decided not to be close minded and actually watch more of it instead of being an arrogant prick and making my decision on it concrete. So I gave it a chance and it ended up blowing me away... had nothing to do with prepossessions or anything like that.

The same happened with DBZ.. I thought it sucked, then one day flippin' through the channels.. I ran into the fight between Goku and Vegeta and was just astonished with the whole fight sequence.. it was unlike anything I've seen, and since then it became one of my favorite shows.. I even made a few AMVs from it... -_- And no shame there either.. lol XD

Ya know AMG ended up being like that for me. at first it seemed reall boring and I was gonna give up on it. But as it went deeper into the story line everything became so much more interesting. Now I absolutely love the manga and the anime.

Don't know if these were mentioned or not, but I'm saying them anyways:

Fushigi Yuugi. I know it gets tiresome after the twentieth or so "Tamahomeeeee!" or "Miaaaakaaaa!" but it's just so beautiful...and Nuriko, Chichiri, Soi, Nakago, Amiboshi, etc. just rock my socks. ^__^ Then again, it was my first REAL anime that I loved, so it will always have a special place in my heart.

Accidently posted before I finished typing all these. Don't know how to modify posts, so I'm being lazy and double posting.

Flame of Recca. Just watch it.

Weis Kreuz, because it's cool.

Yu-Yu Hakushou, because Hiei is short and kicks butt and Kurama fights with roses. How cool is that?

Samurai X: Trust and Betrayel. It made me cry. That is a rare thing to occur, especially when watching a movie, so just as a fair warning, it's a tear jerker. Keep tissue box handy, folks.

Akira. It's a classic. It may bore you (I got a bit bored), but treat it like you would something like Gone With the Wind or Casablanca. It is neccesary in order to become well rounded and cultured.

Naruto. I don't have cable, so I wasn't tainted by filler episodes I keep hearing about. I have a few friends who showed me what they had of it. I think we got up to episode 180 or so. Yay. Love it. Gaara and Naruto totally are cool. The Hyugas are cool, too. Actually, I can't really think of a character I don't like. Heh.

Blue Gender. It's a sci/fi anime I only saw a few episodes of, but it looked intriguing.

Gundam Wing. I don't care what people say about this one. Releena loves Heero, Heero loves Releena. They say each other's names waay too much, just like Tamahome and Miaka do, sure sign of infatuation. Ugh. That annoys me. But Duo, Wufei, Trowa, and Quatre are cool. Dorthy is pretty neat too. Trieze is too cool.

Marmalade Boy. Well, I haven't actually seen the anime, but I've heard good things about it. I own the manga and liked it. Mostly because it was like a soap opera. Reminded me of my life at times.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. After you finish the anime, you can tell why the guy when to the hospital for depression...wow, this one kicks butt. Loved it to pieces and bought all the subtitled anime of it I could find in my home town. Maybe someday I'll get desperate enough to get on to amazon.com for the rest of it.

Please Save My Earth. I really liked it. Good plot and whatnot.

Inu Yasha. Ok, Kagome can get annoying, but I still liked the story. Sesshou Maru reminds me of Kaiba Seto.

Record of the Lotus War. Amusing to me.

Petshop of Horrors. Creepy, but so beautifully done. D rules! I wish my nails would grow that long...

Graveyard of the Fireflies. Another tear jerker. I didn't cry, but I got so close...

Mononoke Hime. Great anime. Beautifully done, decent plot.

X/1999. Only watch this if you like beautiful drawings. I didn't like the plot or anything, but it was just too pretty. Darn you, Clamp!

Furi Kuri aka FLCL. This. Is. A Nutcase anime. I got the idea of what was going on the third time around, but...wow....yeah...Elvis impersonations must die.

Full Metal Alchemist. I'm hooked. Love the characters. Spent 30 bucks on the third anime, just because I really, really, really wanted to see what happened next. I'm addicted. I'll need to go into therapy about this one, I think. :P

Full Metal Panic. Heehee...this one made me laugh for a week.

Vampire Hunter D. I love vampires, so it was just my thing.

Wolf's Rain. I loved the idea. I like odd stuff (you can probably tell that by now on your own without me telling you), so this appealed to me.

Battle Royale. There are no words to explain this one other than: Tears, blood, fear, excitement, betrayel, anger, death, politics. This is a must see for those with a mature mind. That means no kiddies should get near this. Age has nothing to do with this one. What you need is a mature and well-honed mind to appreciate this one fully, I think.

I think that's all I want to talk about for now.

Isn't Battle Royale a live action movie though?
Don't get me wrong, it's a great movie, but given they asked for anime recommendations...

(...there was a manga, of course, however, from all reports I've heard, that version was awful by comparison.)

I feel that there are many categories that must be covered in order to get the full effect of the animes. Here are the categories and animes that I feel would be best suited for these genres:

Mech - Gundam Wing
Post apocalyptic future - Akira
Giant Bugs - Blue Gender
Insanity - Excel Saga
Space Adventures - Cowboy Bebop
Romance - Love Hina
Samurai - Ninja Scroll or Rurouni Kenshin
Religious theories - Neon Genesis Evangelion
Discovering your own strength - Vandread
Sibling Rivalry - Trigun

These are just my own opinions, but they are what I feel should be seen.
Disposable Gundams
Turn the Page Spike
Demon Battles
Keep you're nose to the grindstone, it sharpens your buggers.

I feel that there are certain animes out there that were revolutionary. Something like Neon Genesis (like the guy who orginal posted this said) is a revolutionary popular anime.

Someother animes might be
FLCL
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Akira

This stuff is still sort of knew, and maybe some people may not consider then revolutionary, but they certainly did something to attract a LOT of anime fans. So, any anime fan should at least have a good idea or some knowledge of these animes.

I know there are others I proabably haven't seen or am forgeting, but I think those are defaintly must see ones

And as always, even though it may not be revolutionary, I always strongly recommend BERSERK!

I'm not sure on that one @ Berserk not being terribly revolutionary.

...sure, the anime was a flop in Japan, but its met with overwhelming success in the US to such a point the people who made the first series were surprised.
