Answer: It's just freaking cool. Does that sum it up?

Slightly older than teenage looking boys flying around with cool hairdoos kicking people's asses with impossible to achieve power along with shooting energy balls at each other.

I'm sorry but that alone is cool enough to become amazingly popular. Doesn't need a decent story "which it does not have" with nice character development "none there too" and beatiful transitions between sagas "ha ha, I'm laughing btw" to kick ass. Plus, the drawings were beyond comprehension for normal animes 20 years ago. That, I think, is a big reason for it becoming so popular.

I'm sorry, but people who say that DragonBall has no story or no character development clearly have read or watched nothing beyond about 5 minutes of SSJ Goku vs Freeza on Namek to come to such an asinine conclusion.

Ya' know what, no... I'm not sorry :).

Dragonball Z has a pretty big plot. As it gets past the saiyajin and namek saga's it gets past the Dragonball Part and more into seperate Character Development.

Because its a simple story. Hero gives himself completely, in order to protect the ones he loves. Hero rises above past self, surpassing all limitations and boundaries to do so.

Why Feh! if i may ask.

when you look at it, alot of "Long" animes have the same elements along with short ones too.

1. Only "one" person can be the absolute best even if theres lots main characters.

2. in alot of cases, if theres a male and female that spends alot of time together, they usually fall for each other.

3. something that only long animes have. They dont have that "middle" feeling that can only be found in short animes, because they're so long, you dont get that feeling of the impending climax that ruins the nice feeling when enjoying your show.

To the untrained eye it may appear that DBZ has a weak storyline but if one were to observe closely, you'd notice quite a few interesting things other than the funny puns.

Saiyan Saga. which focuses around Goku.
You finally learn Goku's origin and why he is unusually strong even for a believed human, has a monkey tail and transforms into a big monkey which wasn't told in DB.

See the Earths hero die.

Followed with that, see him throw down against the Prince of all the saiyans.

Learn about what Piccolo really is, and how he changed.

Namek Saga.
Learn the true origin of the Dragonballs.

Get to see the first trip into space, which wasnt done in DB, except for Boss Rabbit being put on the moon.

See the person responsible for killing all the saiyans.

Get to see a damn Super Saiyan!

From whats seen in the Bardock special, see how Goku was destined to fight Frieza.

Android Saga(cause the Garlic Jr. Saga blows)
See Bulma & Vegeta's son.

See that Goku was gonna die if not for Trunks arrival.

Trunks ruining what coulda been the best fight by killing Freiza who Goku would have more than likely killed himself in about 1min.

Cell Saga.

See what it would be like if one character had all the abilities.

See Kami & Piccolo do(to them) do the unthinkable by fusing back together because of a greater threat.

See Piccolo kick major ass.

See Gohans somewhat ultimate power.

The first enemy that required all the fighters to work together as one in order to win.

Buu Saga.

See the Ultimate enemy that no one could beat.

Goku and Vegeta's long awaited rematch.

Gohans Ultimate power.

Vegeta do something selfless by trying to blow up Buu.

Goku and Vegeta(to them) do the the unthinkable by fusing together in order to stop Buu.

See what a character would be like if Goku and Vegeta were one character.

See someone finally destroy the Earth.

I say DB(Z) did pretty well for itself considering to started out as a weekly manga in the news paper.
