I wouldn't knock the man entirely...true, working for 4Kids is never a proud point in anyone's career, but his work on the Patlabor dub was...while not great, decent, and he actually did quite well in the dub for Now and Then, Here and ThereTails_Prower_Fairy wrote:Dan Green as "Yami Yugi" , his voice stinks like 4Kids YGO version

If I watched Naruto in english first I wouldn't like the show. Main character sounds too obnoxious at all times no matter what.. I'm in no way a sub fan boy and I don't care how they pronounce things so they could say narato for all I care. It just annoys the fuck out of me. I can't even get people into the show. I tell them to check it out on tv and they tell me it's stupid. when I've got people to download the sub I seem to get better results of making fans out of people. I think that says something.

First, I don't have much to add about annoying voice acting. I agree that sometimes the voice is irritating, and may be what the character is supposed to be, and sometimes the voice seems wrong for the character. I am sure the people working on the dubs are trying to give us the best possible dub with voices they believe are fight for the character. We all have different tastes so we won't always agree with them.Willen wrote:I do agree to a certain extent that the english Naruto is skewed toward a younger age in the US, but that is the way the American broadcasting system is setup now. No alcohol, guns, smoking, blood, cursing, nudity and a whole bunch of other things are prohibited or very discouraged in shows targeted to kids. Either Japanese kids are more mature than American kids, or the US is a bunch of uptight prudes living in a fantasy world of their own. It's not like the kid characters in anime are the ones smoking and drinking. Adults smoke and drink in real life, why can't you show it in a cartoon? I know many people used to play shoot-em-up with their friends using toy guns and even their fingers as a kid and I've even played with Airsoft guns when I was a teen, that doesn't mean that I'm going to go buy a gun and go on a GTA-type shooting spree. Older cartoons like G.I. Joe and anime-based stuff like Star Blazers, Battle of the Planets (G-Force/Gatchaman), and Robotech had characters that used guns (admittedly, most were laserguns but guns nonetheless). I think parents and peers have more of an influence whether someone starts smoking, drinking, or going on a rampage than a character in a TV show. This whole "parenting by proxy" by using TV media is getting out of hand.
That said, Willen, I couldn't agree with you more. I think they are being idiots with their "protecting" our children from these terrible influences. Smoking and drinking are still big issues in our highschools, perhaps worse than when I was a schoolboy, in spite of removing advertizing and usage in the media. When I was a boy our cartoons had plenty of violence, Poppeye beating the s__t out of Bluto, Elmer Fud always out to "kill the wabbit" and many others. Westerns were big on TV, the Cisco Kid, The Lone Ranger, and others, showed plenty of shooting. I never missed the show Combat on TV, Think those machine guns in a WWII show weren't killing people. My favorite toys were my western 6 guns, a thompson sub machine gun, and a machine gun on a tripod with a crank that could fire off a roll of caps in a few seconds. I've carried a pocket knife since 5th grade, and if someone had told us it was a weapon, back in my school days, we would have said oh? you're crazy, it's just a pocket knife. We even had kids who brought guns to school because they were going hunting after school. My, how times have changed. Maybe by protecting our children from all this we are missing the chance to teach them about such things and how to handle them. We really need to teach our children respect, for wepons, for the law, for authority, and mostly for the lives and property of others.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?
