Unfortunately, G kind of fell into the same hole in getting started that happens to a lot of super robot titles.
It takes them a bit to jump-start the story
1-5 are there to help set up the world it takes place in and introduce the main characters.
It's not until you see episode 6 that you get an idea what it's all about, who the man in Domon's picture is, why he's hunting for him, etc.
and even after that, we still get a few more 'Have you seen this man?' episodes before the story finally picks up steam in Shinjuku (around ep 12, I think...)
