Yeah, there are lots of similarities. As others have pointed out, a lot of those are lost, or invalid thanks to the overwhelming use of those exact same shots in other shows. Things like, having tanks, buildings and what not explode behind main characters is a staple, as are looking looks by the commanders, evil conspiracies and cohabitating with hot coworkers.
I personally am always surprised at how well Eva holds up in terms of animation and style, even after all these years. RahXephon had the benefit of lots of CG and character style development over the years. Personally, I always hated Shinji as a main character. Eva's greatest flaw is having a sucky character like him.
As others have pointed out, in Eva Shinji's developement (or lack of in my eyes) is what the story is servicing. In RahXephon, Ayato's development is in service to the larger story. While the two stories themselves are similar, they are working in opposite ways with the main characters.
Mostly, I just hate shinji. You could have replaced his character with Dogtato-kun, or a stick figure, and done just as well.

As someone who went through allot of depression around the same age as shinji, I can tell you that as a character he's extremely realistic. It's just that unless you've been through a long cycle of harsh depression it's hard to understand him. That's why most people simply dismiss shinji as a "whiny little boy". I'd explain in more detail, but now I've got college to get to...madbunny wrote: Mostly, I just hate shinji. EvaXephon I bloody love you. Ya put allot of hard work into that man, it was an interesting read. Now that you've proved that RX gets half its material from evangelion, any chance you could find out which daytime melodrama it steals the other half of its ideas from.
